PostPosted: Jun 24, 2014 02:38    Post subject: How to "cement" Amethyst clusters

Hello,
I am brand new here and not even sure this is the right forum for this but hey what the h-e double hockey sticks.

My question is, I purchased a nice Amethyst Geode over the weekend to add to my crystal collection. It is bowl shaped and almost looks like 1/2 of a clam or something. I have other pieces of Amethyst in my collection and I know they have added some sort of "cement" to them to give them a base. I also know they do this to Cathedrals to give them a base to stand on. I was wondering if anyone knows how to do this? What kind of cement they use for it? I was really thinking it would be cool to make a mini cathedral for my desk in my office. It will also probably help to re-enforce a crack it has going across it about 2/3 of the way.

Thanks you in advance!

This is what I am looking to add to it.
The cement that was added to give this piece a base. I have several that have been added to like this, just want to know how to do it myself.

I'm not sure this is the right forum for this info either, but here goes. A product I've used to good effect is called thin-set tile floor adhesive or mortar, with a latex binder-additive. It's grey so you will have to paint it to match the green of the outside of the geode. Follow the directions on the bag. You might have to apply several coats to achieve the desired thickness. Just about every cathedral from Brazil is treated in such a manner, sometimes to re-enforce the shell or to add a base as you suggest.

Two four foot tall cathedrals were knocked over in Tucson so we tried to repair them and recoup some of the loss. It went in the scratch and dent department at a much reduced price.
