PostPosted: Aug 04, 2014 11:59    Post subject: Crystal Mountains - Minerals of the Cairngorms NEW BOOK

Members may be interested to know that I have been working for the past three years on a book about the history of the minerals of the Cairngorms in Scotland. Some of you will be familiar with Mike Wood's interesting posts about his explorations in the area - a passion we share.

Well, finally, the project is nearing completion, and the book will be published at the end of September, in time for the Bakewell Show in Derbyshire, England.

I have set up a simple website which gives details of the book and also has a contact form for anyone interested in being notified when it is available.

Over time I hope to develop the website into a useful resource for British topographical mineralogy, and to this end have posted a selection of images and some introductory notes on the minerals of the Cairngorms, and also a selection of stuff on the type locality for anglesite, Parys Mountain, on Anglesey in North Wales.

If you would like to know more, or wish to be notified when the book is available, please visit https://www.britishmineralogy.com (link normalized by FMF) and take a look.

Sounds like it could be a good reading book. I like books that you can read and are more than catalog like references.

I will see if I can put some hobby fiunds aside for it.

Hi Mike

Thanks for the good wishes. I have just uploaded my very first Windows Moviemaker video to my website - it is a series of images intended to give people a feel for how fantastic the Cairngorms National Park, across the diversity of scenery, weather, landscape, vegetation and minerals.

I've also uploaded an image of the book cover and some sample pages to give a "sneak preview".

Please take a look https://www.britishmineralogy.com (link normalized by FMF) and scroll to the bottom of the page for the link to the video. (You should recognise quite a lot of the places!)

Look forward to catching up in Bakewell.

Roy

PostPosted: Oct 04, 2014 03:15    Post subject: Re: Crystal Mountains - Minerals of the Cairngorms NEW BOOK - Now Launched!

The launch event for the book took place in Edinburgh on 25th September, attended by about 70 people. It was a great evening and truly a celebration of the minerals of the Cairngorms, with guests from the Natural History Museum London, National Museums Scotland, the Hunterian Museum and many aspects of the mineral hobby.

I have posted a short report with a selection of photos here https://www.mindat.org/article.php/2121/Edinburgh+Book+Launch%3A+Crystal+Mountains+-+Minerals+of+the+Cairngorms

I'll be at the Bakewell Rock Exchange (in Derbyshire, UK) on 11th and 12th October so hope to catch up with some FMF members there!

Regards

Roy

Roy

So far I am really enjoying the book, but the latest MinRec has interrupted my reading of it. I'll get back to reading it soon.
