Apophyllite-(KF), stilbite, heulandite

Overall size: 138 mm x 90 mm x 45 mm. Main apo crystal size: 29 mm. Field collected: about 1996. Ex Jan Buma collection. Description from the vendor: "Most of the crystals of fluorapophyllite are doubly terminated, formed from a prism and very sharp pyramids. The brilliance and transparency are very intense and the crystals of pink stilbite seem to soften the aesthetics, giving balance to the specimen".

Pune, Jalgaon, Maharashtra, India.

Tourmaline (schorl), feldspar

Single schorl crystal on feldspar. Crystal size: 88 mm tall, 37 mm wide. Weight: 292 g. The three upper faces have a curious irregular surface, perhaps a bit stepped, unlike the vertical ones, that are bright and smooth. Rhodochrosite, quartz, pyrite, sphalerite, tetrahedrite

Two sharp translucent rhodochrosite rhombohedral crystals to 18 mm on the main edge with quartz, pyrite, sphalerite and tetrahedrite. Both crystals are partially coated by a low-temperature, second generation, pale pink rhodochrosite layer, which adds to the mineralogical story of the piece. Unfortunately I don't know of any way to get rid of the layer, that does no good to the aesthetics (and the value) of the specimen. Overall size: 73 mm x 56 mm x 39 mm. Weight: 268 g.

Carles, I am very curious about the termination on the schorl from Pakistan. It appears to be a contact as it is so rough-surfaced, instead of terminated by crystal faces. What is going on with this piece? It seems so very different from all of your other fine specimens.

Hi John!

Unlike the schorls we all are used to, this specimen has three well defined upper faces, typical of the species, but with a very visible and curious irregular surface. There is no contact nor damage in any of those faces. If observed with a magnifier glass, they may seem a bit stepped.

The schorl showing bright vertical faces and an almost perfect hexagonal section is after all a piece that I like very much. Better in person.

Thank you for your comments.

To John S. White

Just for you (and the other readers) to see, and for clarity reasons as well, I've posted here a new picture taken from the schorl you were talking about, where the upper termination edges have been enhanced with a blue line.

This specimen is the same that can be seen above at https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=5690#5690

PostPosted: Jun 15, 2009 10:34    Post subject: Re: Collection of Carles Millan

Aren't these "rough" terminations either a result of parallel growth or maybe differential etching?

I've seen tourmalines from Pakistan consisting of multiple, very-fine crystals that form what appears to be a single consolidated crystal with a complex termination that looks at a distance, like a single pinacoid termination, sort of like this crystal. Some you have to study quite closely to see the individual crystals.

Tourmaline, like other minerals, also exhibits etching on some faces while being pristine on others. Generally, I wouldn't expect such a sharp termination as this crystal, but in minerals all things seems possible (even the improbable things).

Hi GneissWare!

With a 15x loupe I cannot see any parallel growth. There is perhaps some etching, but my knowledge of this matter is not enough to be sure.

Thank you Carles, I suspected it was something like that, and I have no idea why this crystal formed the way it did. Another "head scratcher."
