(Old specimen, better photos)

Fluorite, calcite

A single cube {100} combined with rhombododecahedral {110} stepped faces of sea green fluorite, with a ribbon of disk shaped colorless small calcite crystals. The fluorite crystal is transparent and undamaged, complete all around, but shows a natural internal cleave on the face {111}, as can be seen in some of the photos. Overall size: 71 x 52 x 40 mm³. Fluorite crystal size: 30 mm wide face to face. Weight: 140 g.

Tobias,

Danke schön once again for your always kind comments, but all those specimens are really nothing special. You only have to surf the net for a while to realize it.

However, I'm very content that you like them.

Carles,

Sure, there's always an even better specimen in a museum, in Rob L.'s store or in Giazotto's private collection. But nevertheless i always admire the beauty and the quality of your minerals.

Fluorite, mica

Deep green single fluorite crystal showing cubic {100} and octahedral {111} faces, complete and undamaged, on muscovite set upon a matrix of orthoclase. Overall size: 50 mm x 27 mm. Crystal size: 19 mm wide. Weight: 30 g. If it were not for the slight roughness of the octahedron faces, the crystal would be fully transparent.

Hi Carles, i also missed your posts - and your minerals :-)

What a great Namibian fluorite!!! You know i really love Namibian minerals and i've seen a lot of green fluos from Erongo - but that one is really exceptional, congratulations to that wonderful specimen!

Yes, it's nice but just a miniature.

Many thanks to both for your kind comments.

I don't agree with "JUST a miniature": Erongo fluorites that

1. have this habitus
2. have such great quality AND colour
3. sit on matrix

are rarely larger than 2 cm. Sure there are larger fluos from the Erongo Mountains, but most of them are cubes or they are paler than yours or they are single crystals or floaters without contrasting matrix or they are damaged/weathered/broken - or all of that ;-)
So you can really be proud of that small but superb specimen.

Tobias,

I fear that I may look like an idiot, but can't remember now having ever seen a fluorite from Erongo except that one. Thank you for giving me such lesson. I'll take note for the future.

Elbaite, albite

Doubly terminated prismatic elbaite crystal, dark green color with a translucent pale pink upper tip and a translucent green bottom. Accompanied all around by numerous thin colorless albite crystals. Undamaged. Overall size: 96 mm x 51 mm. Elbaite crystal size: 94 mm high, 16 mm wide. Weight: 103 g. Doubly terminated elbaite crystals are not common at this locality.

The albite crystals are very hard to photograph. Sorry!

Stak Nala, Haramosh Mts., Skardu District, Baltistan, Gilgit-Baltistan (former Northern Areas), Pakistan.

A nala in Balti language is the place, usually a gorge, where a glacier melts.

A map of Pakistan useful to know where Stak Nala is is available here. Look for the deposit at the map very center.

For those interested in Pakistani minerals, other specimens from Stak Nala can be seen at

Hi Jim !

And I envy your self collected Arkansas diamonds. I have on my desktop right now the book Private Mineral Collections in Texas, the page of the Shelly & Jim Houran collection open. You must be proud of all the 14 photos therein.
