Hi, Martin!

First of all, thank you for your kind comments about my specimen.

However, and although I'm not by far an expert on crystallography, I have to disagree with your opinion on the pyramid order issue. According to the old book A Textbook of Mineralogy, by Edward S. Dana and William E. Ford, in the reference to the beryl species, the angle that the pinacoid and the first order pyramid form is ca. 30º (π/6 rad) while this angle with the second order pyramid is ca. 45º (π/4 rad).

I'm a bit shortsighted and suffer with presbyopia and astigmatism (I'm no longer a teen) but fortunately I'm still well able to differentiate such angles with my naked eye. No need of a goniometer, that anyway I don't own.

I like that the stibnite and the quartz are both like needles, but with the best possible colour contrast. A wonderful combination, Carles!

A very fine cuprite specimen, Carles, good size for cuprite crystals. And ex. Desmond Sacco, what an honor to have this specimen!

PostPosted: Oct 09, 2015 08:31    Post subject: Collection of Carles Millan - Pyrite from Huanzala

Pyrite, calcite, tetrahedrite, sphalerite

Lustrous cube-octahedron {100} {111} combination of pyrite crystals with numerous milky white translucent scalenohedrons of calcite, accompanied with minor sphalerite and a couple of small tetrahedrite tetrahedrons, all over the main crystal, on a matrix of pyrite. Complete all around, a 360° specimen that is displayable from all sides. Overall size: 81 mm x 75 mm x 71 mm. Main pyrite crystal: 41mm wide. Major calcite crystal: 22mm long. Weight: 566 g.

Huanzala Mine, Huallanca District, Dos de Mayo Province, Huánuco Department, Peru.

Note that Huanzala mine is probably the most prolific deposit of pyrite ever. Collection specimens have been produced there by the millions, but unfortunately most of them with visible damage.
