PostPosted: Aug 03, 2016 07:11    Post subject: Collection of Carles Millan: Sphalerite from Trepca

Sphalerite, dolomite, calcite

Group of black highly lustrous sphalerite crystals showing very sharp edges and well defined mirror-like faces, which is not typical of the species, partially covered with smaller colorless crystals of dolomite and calcite that produce a deep and nice contrast. The specimen has been kept by a local miner in pristine condition, free of any damage, since its extraction some time between years 1994-2002. Contains several spinel-law twins on the octahedral {111} face as can easily be appreciated in the photos. Overall size: 124 mm x 87 mm x 39 mm. Major crystal size: 29 mm on edge. Weight: 471 g. Unfortunately this is a not photography friendly specimen.

Stan Terg Mine, Trepča Complex, Trepča Valley, Kosovska Mitrovica, Kosovska Mitrovica District, Kosovo.

A really superb classic from Trepca, Carles: Impressive size of the larger crystals, great luster, best possible contrast of black and white - congratulations :)

Tobi,

I must thank you once again for the kind comments. I'm glad you like it. However, the specimen is much better in person. But my inability to get the right shots is the culprit.

It's not calcite "or" dolomite, it's both ;-)

PostPosted: Oct 05, 2016 07:06    Post subject: Collection of Carles Millan: Pyrite from Huanzala Mine

Pyrite, quartz

Group with several octahedral {111} pyrite crystals on a bed of colorless quartz, a typical specimen of that prolific and already classic mine. The main crystal is complete all around, measures 53 mm from tip to tip and 41 mm on edge, with narrow stepped edges that may be faces of rhombododecahedron {110}. The octahedral faces are mirror-like, as can be appreciated with the reflected quartz crystals. In very good condition except for some natural but stabilized cracks (hard to see in the photos). Overall size: 102 mm x 70 mm x 40 mm. Weight: 314 g.

Huanzala Mine, Huallanca District, Dos de Mayo Province, Huánuco Department, Peru.

Photo supplied by Rudolf Watzl.

PostPosted: Oct 05, 2016 10:24    Post subject: Re: Collection of Carles Millan

What a great coincidence: This specimen appeared just some days ago on Watzl's website, I browsed the new specimen gallery and thought "That would be a perfect specimen for Carles and his Peru collection", no kidding!!! :-)

This specimen has such wonderfully balanced aesthetics: That large and simply perfect pyrite octahedron in the middle of that quartz "nest", the contrast of these minerals, the appealing shape of the whole specimen - a truly amazing beauty from Peru, congratulations!

Aegirine, orthoclase, zircon

Group of black color aegirine crystals with acute edges, displaying very lustrous almost mirror-like faces and unusual (in this locality) pyramidal terminations with a sharp pointed habit. Several crystals of colorless orthoclase accompany them on the base and a small zircon crystal can be seen on the back side. Overall size: 108mm x 51mm. Main aegirine crystal: 12mm wide, 92mm tall. PostPosted: Nov 28, 2016 04:22    Post subject: Collection of Carles Millan: Quartz from Las Vigas

Quartz, epidote

Group of purple to colorless transparent quartz crystals on a matrix covered by contrasting small acicular green epidote. Overall size: 111mm x 91mm. Widest crystal: 14mm. Tallest crystal: 53mm. Weight: 297g.

Since I stand against the use of varieties I much prefer not to name it amethyst. Simply quartz.
