Hi Pierre, certainly a peculiar shape and the specimen is a floater, so no indication what could be underneath. My guess would be Dolomite, if anything. Regards.

Hello Heimo. Needless to say, I love your collection! What is the black mineral on the calcite ( https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/download.php?id=72298 ) Is it perhaps mottramite? Best regards.

Thank you Pierre. Those little spheres on the Calcite specimen are actually dark green in colour. As with quite a few of my specimens, I can't with any degree of certainty identify some of the secondary minerals present on these specimens. Any expert opinion/advice from knowledgeable members of the Forum will thus be appreciated. Kind regards.

I would say Duftite, but without an analysis is impossible to be sure.

Thank you Jordi. I fully realize that absolute certainty is only possible with an analysis. The effort however, from here, for me does in many cases not warrant this effort for to my opinion secondary minerals on specific specimens. Opinions and suggestions on this forum are satisfactory for me. Kind regards.

Heimo, it takes a while until one is able to make really good mineral photos. Just look at my collection thread, the first really good photos appeared on very recent pages. Some years ago my photos were horrible, even far away from the quality of your's! I had a bad camera and no idea about how to use light and background. A long process of trial and error and many good advices from experienced mineral collectors and photographers (e.g. Carles Millan) helped me to develop. Today, there are still some mineral specimens that make me desperate, but I'm also able to manage good photos of many of them, skills that I just could dream about a few years ago ...
You should start a discussion with other collectors and ask them how to improve your photos, I recommend this part of our forum: https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewforum.php?f=19

Thank you very much for the expert advice Tobi. At this point in time I'm not sure how long and whether I will continue with mineral collecting, hence I don't really want to invest in expensive equipment. Regards.
Regards

Tobi,
Thanks for your gentle words, but you are wrong. Unfortunately I'm not among the experienced mineral collectors and photographers.

Hi Heimo
Yesterday a most viewed photo took me to your collection page 9, I browsed through and have a few queries ...
Dscf 4936 is labelled calcite I would suggest it is a dolomite specimen
" 4953 again calcite but I think it could be smithsonite
" 5289 locality is said to be Goboboseb I think locality is Brandberg as these quartz on feldspar matrix are from Brandberg and those on granite matrix are from the Goboboseb
Dscf 5229 I wonder if it is smithsonite as the combination with azurite is extremely rare
" 5524 The fluorite, is that quartz or baryte? I've never seen quartz like that from here
" 5575 The matrix would suggest Goboboseb
" 8215 I confirm mottramite
Kind Regards
Debbie

Hello Debbie,
Thanks for the enquiries. It must be remembered that I am by no means an expert and that most identifications are made by visual comparison and not by lab analysis:
4933-4937: Front of specimen definitely calcite and back of specimen dolomite with scattered calcite crystals.
4953/4954: Definitely calcite.
5229/5231: Visually Iam quite certain it is smithsonite.
5289/5575: Both specimens were purchased in Uis and the information as to locality given by dealer.
5524: I am not able to confirm or deny your suggestion as the information given is that obtained from the miner.
8215: Thanks for the confirmation.
Kind regards,
Heimo

I have a few similar specimens.
1. The smithsonite is overgrown on a limonitic boxwork structure.
2. The smithsonite appears to be grown in single to multiple similar layers with a boxwork structure. There is no remnant overgrown structure. It appears the smithsonite may have overgrown on material which was then leached away?
Anyhow, I've started looking for these as interesting to collect.

Hi Robert, thanks for the reply. I take it you are referring to specimen 5229/5231.
