Good point Josele!
Euclase was the first mineral that sprang to my mind for its similarity in color and striation, as it occurs in the same area (Gachalá and Chivor mining districts).
And sometimes it does combine with emerald but that's another story... Emeclase? :-)

There are lots of clear quartz crystals on this Muzo specimen.
The largest one is sitting next to a lustrous vivid green emerald.
Small but attractive specimen where the beauty of the emerald is magnified by the combination of quartz and calcite atop a black shale host rock.

A fairly large specimen from La Pita.
There is an aggregate of 2 emerald crystals in the center.
On one side, the aggregate exhibits one single continuous plane along the c axis (image 43b) whereas on the opposite side, the faces of the 2 prisms are clearly differentiated (image 52b).
Some calcite crystals exhibit unusual crystallization patterns (72b & 47b).
Host rock is black shale.

Pencil-shaped emeralds are more commonly seen in the Eastern Belt, in the Chivor district.
Calcite exhibits various lustres (opaque to vitreous) and colors (white to brownish).
There are also some tiny nodules of pyrite in the back.
Host rock is black shale.

This is a real "ganga" as they use to call matrix specimens in Colombia.
It has a fairly good size and the emeralds are associated with different generations of calcite. The greyish large tabular calcite crystals are also seen in the neighboring La Pita district.
There are some isolated nodules of pyrite in the back.
Host rock is black shale.

Another "ganga" from La Pita with 3 crystals, all terminated.
Large matrix specimens from this mining district flooded the market in the early 2000's and it was relatively easy to get pieces with multiple crystals.
These days such a specimen would be broken apart into several smaller pieces before being sold.
Host rock is black shale.

These are great specimens, you are very fortunate to have them, good photo's too! Pardon me for asking, but why do the emeralds occur in calcite veins in shale and limestone? Are there shallow granite intrusions below the deposits providing the source of Beryllium?
Thanks, Mike

Thanks Mike!
In the case of the Colombian deposits, the source of beryllium (local/sedimentary vs. deep/magmatic) is uncertain.
But it seems like there is a consensus among scientific bodies to support a sedimentary origin as various studies have proven that the regional black shale had a large enough beryllium reservoir to have been a potential source.
The parent hydrothermal fluids/brines reacted with organic matters in the shales to release trapped chromium, vanadium and beryllium, which in turn enabled emerald formation.

Doubly terminated emeralds are not common, even in Colombia.
This one has a flat wide termination on one end but as the crystal width gets thinner towards the other end, the other termination is much smaller.
Shape is also different as the main crystal divides itself into 2 aggregate crystals on the smaller end.
Host rock is black shale (not pictured).
Considering the rarity of doubly terminated emeralds and the quality of this one, I could not resist flooding this post with many photos.

Cluster of velvety blue-green emeralds which grew in a small cavity embedded in a typical matrix of iron-stained calcite.
Unmistakably from Peñas Blancas.

Another good example of the grass green color commonly found in the La Pita mining district.
This specimen comes from Polveros where serious mining started only in the late 90's.
Emerald is associated with striated calcite and clear quartz.
Host rock is black shale (not pictured).

'In the case of the Colombian deposits, the source of beryllium (local/sedimentary vs. deep/magmatic) is uncertain.
But it seems like there is a consensus among scientific bodies to support a sedimentary origin as various studies have proven that the regional black shale had a large enough beryllium reservoir to have been a potential source.
The parent hydrothermal fluids/brines reacted with organic matters in the shales to release trapped chromium, vanadium and beryllium, which in turn enabled emerald formation.'
Thanks Gerard!
Now I am wondering if there are other similar deposits, of emeralds in calcite veins in black shale, elsewhere in the world. Have there been any studies of the temperature of formation of the emeralds, from the examination of fluid inclusions?
Thank you for your super photographs, I like the specimens with the quartz crystals, they seem to compliment the emerald/calcite combination perfectly!
Regards, Mike

I appreciate your comments Mike!
From Simandl, G.J., Paradis, S. and Birkett, T. (1999): Colombia-type Emeralds; in Selected British Columbia Mineral Deposit Profiles, Volume 3 :
"Colombia-type emerald deposits differ from the classical schist-hosted emerald deposits in many ways. They are not spatially related to known granite intrusions or pegmatites, they are not hosted by mafic/ultramafic rocks, and are emplaced in non-metamorphosed rocks. Green beryls, where vanadium is the source of colour, are described at Eidsvoll deposit (Norway) where pegmatite cuts bituminous schists. Such deposits may be better classified as pegmatite-hosted."
The Colombian emerald deposits are the only known deposits where there is no evidence of magmatic activity and it has been demonstrated that circulation processes within the host black shales were sufficient to form emerald.
So Colombian emeralds are truly unique also in that sense.
There have been several studies on fluid inclusions which reported temperatures in the range of 290 to 360 deg Celcius for emerald precipitation. For more insights on this topic, I recommend these 2 papers
1) Cheilletz A., Féraud G., Giuliani G., 1994. Time-Pressure and Temperature Constraints on the Formation of Colombian, Economic Geology, Vol. 89.1994, pp. 361-380.
2) Ottaway, T.L., Wicks, F.J., Bryndzia, L.T., Keyser, T.K., Spooner, E.T.C., 1994. Formation of the Muzo hydrothermal emerald deposit in Colombia. Nature 369, 552–554.

Thank you for your informative reply Gerard. The temperature of formation is quite high, I suppose it's because of the proximity of the Andes, or deep burial, or both. I shall try and find these references you have given.
Mike :-)

These elongated emerald clusters standing at about 30 degrees on a grey shale host rock are typical from Chivor.
They have a slight blue cast which is difficult to render with my lighting conditions.
Pyrite is almost invisible at naked eye.
Unmistakably Chivor!
Last image is for my question - not sure whether these are white bladed albite or calcite crystals.
Not the most spectacular matrix specimen but the host rock, the calcite and the emerald cluster create a very aesthetic combination.

What an outstanding specimen! Well, actually MOST of the emeralds you are presenting are outstanding, but this one impressed me the most, simply wonderful!

Really appreciate your comments Tobi! Thanks!
When I first saw Colombian emeralds in matrix, my eyes were always focused on the beryl(s).
It took me a while before I realize how much the Colombian matrix with such a variety of combinations of host rocks and minerals would contribute to the emerald aesthetic appeal.
Although Chivor's production is tiny in comparison to Muzo, Coscuez and La Pita, the Chivor specimens take this combination to a level rarely seen in the other districts.
Let me dig a bit :-)
