Nice start, a good piece, proper photo, detailed comments, let's go!
Thanks for sharing.

From the beginning I sensed this could be a very interesting thread, but it is even exceeding my expectations. Should not be easy to gather a collection like this. Maybe some day Gérard will explain the story to us...

Thanks again for this appetizing green salad. Long life for Green Fever!

Josele

When all this started in the late 90's I had no idea where the Colombian "Camino Verde" would take me to.

15 years later, now that my eyes are trained to pick up the specific Colombian wavelengths of green light, I am still unsure where I stand.
(For sure it does not help to choose the right lettuce as my significant other keeps saying...)

On a strict accounting level my collection is growing and so are the number of localities my specimens come from. I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.

But I have no doubt there are still many surprises waiting ahead and following the green path has never been more exciting!

Many thanks again for showing interest.

Gérard

PostPosted: Oct 10, 2014 12:12    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - Coscuez

White and grey calcite are commonly associated in Coscuez.
Also quartz can be found - this specimen has a couple of small translucent quartz crystals, one of them stands right over one of the emerald crystal faces.
Emerald is 29mm long.
Wanted to enjoy the sun today so some of the photos were taken under daylight.

PostPosted: Oct 10, 2014 16:21    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - Muzo

This is a typical Muzo specimen where the black shale matrix is covered by 2 distinct layers of crystals
1) A very thin layer of crystallized white albite
2) Lying over the layer of albite, a 1/2 cm thick layer of various crystallized minerals - emeralds, grey calcite and pyrite.
The emerald crystals lying on the matrix are the ones that survived from either a dynamite blast in the mine or from cutting (Or both as all the standing emerald crystals are gone).
Longest emerald is 17mm long.

Thank you for your comments Joseph!

Being almost a single-mineral/single-variety collector, I thought at first it would be pretty boring to start a thread showing specimens with the same colors, the same shapes and the same associations.

But the truth is that there is so much variety in the colors, the crystal habits and the associations that each piece is truly unique.

Thanks again.

Hi Gérard. Ithink I can easily get used to collecting emeralds for the rest of my life (if I had the chance) :-) Please keep them coming.

PostPosted: Oct 12, 2014 11:44    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - Special Colombian quartz for Pierre

Merci Pierre!
To increase even more your interest, I selected a special specimen just for you today.
It's a 20mm long double terminated quartz from the Muzo mining district.
The quartz crystal is literally sandwiched within an emerald crystal which has grown around it.
The color of the quartz crystal in the photos does not not look.. crystal clear!
Being almost surrounded by the emerald, it comes out with a greenish tone in the photos when the crystal is actually colorless (rock crystal).
Pierre, hopefully this will open your appetite for more specimens involving Colombian quartz in the future.
Also note the interesting (as always) crystallization patterns on one side of the emerald crystal.
Moral of the day: Emeralds can be very protective towards quartz

Hi Gérard. I appreciate it. My wife and I just came back about an hour ago from digging quartz crystals. We found some nice clear ones but unfortunately no emeralds:-) Regards

PostPosted: Oct 14, 2014 10:32    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - Coscuez

The Coscuez mining district encompasses several mines and has been historically a major source of Colombian emeralds.
Today Coscuez is still very active and accounts for a large part of the Colombian emerald production.
Matrix is a rusty-weathering light grey shale with interbedded (?) limestone (?).
Emerald crystals are fairly elongated and have a pale green color. They are unusually clean with no inclusions visible to the naked eye.
One of the striking feature of this specimen is an unusual variety of crystal habits and colors for the calcite. Color ranges from immaculate white to pinkish. Most of the calcite crystals are coated with a dusting of an unknown mineral. At the end of this post, there are some photos featuring the coated calcite, any suggestion appreciated.
Main emerald crystal is 13mm long.

In photos can't see the shape of these tiny crystals. They look like spheroidal aggregates and it seems that they are only on the calcite crystals, not on emeralds.

Maybe limonitized pyrite?

In photos can't see the shape of these tiny crystals. They look like spheroidal aggregates and it seems that they are only on the calcite crystals, not on emeralds.

Maybe limonitized pyrite?

Your observation is correct Josele, these tiny crystals only appear on the calcite.
I think you are spot on regarding the coating mineral, especially when looking at the color tones of the aggregates in the upper part of the crystal.
Thin pyrite aggregates are very common in Coscuez, more common than crystallized nodules of pyrite.
This specimen does not contain any pyrite aggregate visible to the naked eye.

It could be Goethite (nodules, like the "cacoxenites" in Quartz from Brazil)

PostPosted: Oct 15, 2014 11:36    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - La Pita (Polveros)

We are back to La Pita which has been producing in average more than 1/3 of the total Colombian production in the past 15 years.
The La Pita mine was discovered in 1997 and gave the name to a large mining district where many more mines have opened afterwards.
The black shale (which does not appear in the photos) is covered by lots of calcite crystals of different size. Part of the specimen is deeply weathered - there are iron oxide deposits almost everywhere. Some of the calcite scalenohedra (in the "front") are still pristine.
Only the upper part of the emerald is translucent. The crystal has a step-like termination which is not uncommon for this locality.

Some very complex forms can also be observed.

Another specimen from La Pita on a white calcite matrix.
A few patches of the black shale host rock can be seen here and there in the interstices.
Some of the calcite crystals are partly coated with black shale.
I added a couple of close ups of calcite scalenohedra (6450 & 6479)
Note the intriguing (for me at least!) striated surfaces on pic.6450
Clear/translucent emeralds are not very common in Polveros and this crystal is no exception.

PostPosted: Oct 28, 2014 07:56    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - Coscuez

Another small specimen from Coscuez.with a black shale matrix.coated with small aggregates of white and grey calcite and one small crystallized nodule of pyrite.
There is also a tiny (2mm long) crystal of quartz sitting next to the emerald.(6580, 6590 & 6617).
The 8mm long emerald crystal is translucent and has an asymmetrical pyramidal termination which is not a very common feature.

A classic specimen from this productive locality. The black shale host rock is coated with grey/black calcite and small nodules of crystallized pyrite.
This specimen has a fairly large size considering there is only one single emerald crystal.
Luckily it escaped from the standard destructive trimming practices which consists in keeping only the surrounding material around the emerald.

PostPosted: Oct 29, 2014 13:30    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - Muzo

This specimen from Muzo has essentially a white to translucent calcite matrix.
There are some remainders of the black shale host rock around the emerald cluster.
The emerald cluster has grown partly over two small patches of black shale, which explains the dark tones of green which can be clearly sensed in some photos.
