From pink to burgundy red.
Compact aggregates of deep to very deep burgundy red scalenohedral crystals.
Metallic-bright, black manganite blades cover the manganite matrix.

... and back to pink!

Scalenohedral 'wheat-sheaf' rhodochrosite crystals arranged in spherical aggregates on a manganite matrix.
Crystals have pale pink cloudy centers and red gem clear tips.

Thanks Tobi.
I spent time tidying and sorting out my inventory lately and I am afraid I have been sidetracked from my usual threads. But now am ready to get back to my favorite mineral/variety.
For a soft landing into the green, I thought I could start on a more geological note with a small (tiny) chunk of an emerald-bearing vein.
Emerald mineralization of Colombia occurs in carbonate-pyrite veins and breccia and this La Pita specimen is a good example of the in-situ conditions prevailing when mining the emeralds.
A few patches of black shale are visible.

Hi,

Didn't know you had turned red lately. Great rhodo & always a pleasure to have a look at some beryls. Looking forward the other ones.

Merci Christophe!
Red has been on my radar for a while. But life circumstances have taken me to Colombia in the mid-90's hence the bias towards the green.

PostPosted: Feb 22, 2016 08:20    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - Gachalá (#196)

Another large cluster of intergrown crystals from the El Toro mine.
The orange-brown limonite cover makes the specimen look like if it was just recovered from the mine. And this is the reason why I had it inspected by several local dealers first.
The discovery of this pocket in 2008 had fueled the imagination of the local mineral craftsmen and at that time the demand had led to lot of fakes on the Bogota market.
This reached a point where some local dealers refused to take the risk of trading them.

Not sure how much of those 'high-risk' limonite covered specimens made it to the foreign market.
As far as I remember I haven't seen any of those specimens offered by internet dealers or at the main European shows (wasn't in Tucson).

PostPosted: Feb 23, 2016 11:33    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - Chivor (#465)

When present, rutile occurs as solid inclusions in the emeralds but is very rarely observed as an associated mineral.
A while back I posted some close-ups in a different thread to request some assistance on what could be that elongated crystal (4mm) with a bright metallic luster. The consensus was that it was very likely rutile.

Host rock is weathered black shale crosscut by a network of calcite veinlets

Like those in Colombia, the Panjshir emeralds are formed through a hydrothermal process.
Host rock is a metamorphic schist that has been subjected to intense hydrothermal alteration.

There are a couple of grey dolomite crystals scattered around.
Also some remnants of the black shale host rock can be observed in the back.

Note the lustrous dark grey dolomite rhombs. The thin long emerald crystal (20mm) is doubly-terminated.
Host rock is black shale.

PostPosted: Mar 01, 2016 10:50    Post subject: Re: Collection of Fiebre Verde - Coscuez (#75)

A rarity from Coscuez because of the... calcite!
Tabular calcite is not common and I have only seen this crystal habit in the Western Belt - mainly in Coscuez.

Calcite is dusted with what looks like whitish goethite.
This specimen is from the early 00's. Host rock is black shale.

Another matrix specimen with no associated minerals other than elongated beryl crystals.
And another illustration of the incredible variety of specimens from the Chivor district, as opposed to Muzo, Coscuez, or La Pita.
The shorter crystal is fractured which suggests that it grew first.
Host rock is a weathered black shale.

Gérard that is a very neat “bent” emerald!

I also like the cluster of emerald crystals and calcite from the La Pita mining district (IMG_6064nb). Very pretty!

Thanks for your comments Jamison.
At first I thought of 2 crystals overlaying each other with a certain angle which would create an optical illusion of a bent emerald.
The main crystal (in background) is actually contacted in 2 separate places by the "bent emerald". The section with 2 "overlaid" crystals runs for about 1/3 of the total length. The remaining 2/3 is actually one single crystal which is indeed bent.

Another aesthetic Chivor specimen, quite different from the previous one.
The contrast between the group of parallel emerald prisms and the black lustrous dolomite wrapping is much nicer than the photos show.
Note the dipping termination.
Host rock is black shale.

Very nice that combination of emerald and a nearly gold-coloured pyrite!
