PostPosted: Aug 01, 2014 23:43    Post subject: Bob's rocks - Quartz and Hematite from Cleator Moor, England

This classic, old-time, very uncommon and showy combination specimen consists of lustrous, sharp Quartz crystals to 34 x 21 mm, many doubly-terminated, which are perched on botryoidal, black and rust-red Hematite "kidney ore". These classic-for-this-locality Quartz crystals are diamond-shaped, dipyramidal, and without prism sides (often incorrectly referred to as beta-Quartz). Bright, sparkly-black specular Hematite covers a portion of the specimen. Specular Hematite and "kidney ore" combination specimens from the old iron mines at Cleator Moor are rather uncommon, and this is an outstanding example in great condition, with only one small chip on a Quartz near the margin. This is from the A.G. Boynton collection, circa 1910-1920. Boynton was a mining engineer and assembled a nice collection of rare specimens from the localities of that period.

Three beautiful specimens, Bob. I especially like the rhodochrosite, fluorite from China. I hope you have a lot more boxes to go through like this one.

PostPosted: Sep 21, 2014 01:22    Post subject: Bob's rocks - Fluorite, Arsenopyrite from Huanggangliang

From a small late 2013 find

RG1370a.jpg
Mineral: Fluorite with Quartz and Arsenopyrite
 Locality:
Huanggang Mines, Hexigten Banner (Kèshíkèténg Qí), Chifeng (Ulanhad), Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China
 Dimensions: 120.0 x 92.0 x 45.0 mm
 Description:
Sharp, teal-blue cuboctahedral Fluorites to 28 mm display with stark contrast on pure-white Quartz. In fact, the Fluorite have been exposed by selectively removing the Quartz coating. This Quartz matrix also reveals a lustrous, silvery Arsenopyrite to 25 mm across, hidden beneath. A close inspection reveals a grey, amorphous metallic coating atop the Arsenopyrite and beneath the Quartz, most likely Molybdenite. This is a top quality specimen from a small find at the end of 2013, and is in pristine condition.

PostPosted: Sep 25, 2014 23:06    Post subject: Bob's rocks - Tourmaline

A couple of circa 1970s tourmalines...

DV-07.jpg
 Mineral: Elbaite on Quartz
 Locality:
Paprok, Kamdesh District, Nuristan Province, Afghanistan
 Dimensions: 105.0 x 76.0 x 70.0 mm
 Description:
A beautiful, well-terminated, bicolored, mostly light-green Elbaite, measuring 65 x 7 mm, with high luster, is partly intergrown with a sharp, clear Quartz point measuring 42 x 35 x 34 mm, all on blades of lustrous, white Albite (v. Cleavlandite). The large Elbaite has a pale-pink core and an intense, neon-green cap. It shows parallel stress fractures and minor chipping, but is unrepaired. Several other partly incomplete Elbaite crystals and a smaller Quartz point provide balance. The Quartz crystals display are sharp and clear with preferentially-frosted faces. This is a fine example from Paprok, from the Dan Velasco collection.

DV-08.jpg
Mineral: Elbaite on Quartz with Lepidolite
 Locality:
Araçuaí, Jequitinhonha, Minas Gerais, Brazil
 Dimensions: 125.0 x 105.0 x 82.0 mm
 Description:
A gemmy, light-cranberry, lustrous, well-terminated Elbaite crystal to 40 x 7 mm is nestled with a cluster of very-light-smoky Quartz comprised mostly of doubly-terminated crystals. The Quartz are slightly fronsted, with the largest measuring 73 x 50 x 35 mm. Light purple Lepidolite and white Albite hosts the Elbaite and Quartz creating a striking, contrasting matrix. Many small cranberry Elbaites are nested in and amongst the Quartz cluster. This is very showy specimen has no damage, and is ex. Dan Velasco collection.

Nice piece you have there especially since it is self-collected. It's also similar to Colorado Amazonite's and not simply massive Perthite interlaid with microcline var amazonite.

Great amazonite, Bob! I didn't know that such specimens can be found in California, my first thought was Colorado or Ethiopia. And the size is impressive, what an awesome find!

Pierre, Tobi and Vitaliy,
Thanks for the kind words.
BTW, I spent 10 years and about 80 days at Kern Knob (my Master's thesis project) and except for a few thumbnails and one miniature, this Amazonite is the best I was able to find.
