PostPosted: Dec 31, 2015 14:19    Post subject: Corundum localities

For those interested in the localities of corundum around the world, along with the environs and people, I hope the mineral community will be interested in a book which came out a couple years ago - written by a gemologist, but very much a "cross-over" publication for anyone interested in minerals and where they originate. Rocks & Minerals recently published a review I wrote at their invitation more than a year ago which I hope is a convincing argument for the book's relevance far beyond the "gem world:"
Quote:
"...Just as the musician Taj Mahal describes himself as an ethnomusicologist, a self-proclaimed student of music in its cultural context, Hughes may be thought of as an ethnogemologist…Given its relatively small print run, don’t miss out on the chance to own this literary treasure from an author who opens his heart to the world, yet has nothing to fear having done so..."

From: [Review of the book Ruby & Sapphire: A Collector’s Guide, by Richard W. Hughes with photographs by Wimon Manorotkul and E. Billie Hughes]. Rocks & Minerals, Vol.91, No.1, pages 88-89] open access here:
https://www.rocksandminerals.org/Back%20Issues/2016/January-February%202016/media-reviews.html

But even if you don't buy the book, please don't miss two of his videos featuring the images from the book which will give a sense of worlds where mineral specimens and gemstones come:

(The author does not make any money from the sales of the book which was produced as a goverment funded project in Thailand and has only a limited print-run).

Happy New Year All!
Elise
