PostPosted: Feb 17, 2016 21:14    Post subject: First trip to Tuscon show 2016

My wife and I just returned home to Maryland from Tucson Gem and Mineral Show exhausted and in awe. The TGMS is both magical and inspiring, My wife gave me this trip as a 60th birthday present. She is not a collector of minerals, but after 1 day she was assessing minerals for their aesthetic beauty. We met Jordi Fabre on the last Saturday of the show and he encouraged me to post my Tucson experience. It was a pleasure to meet him, and I will post some of my pictures today with more to follow.

Congratulations on your first trip to Tucson, Steven! Thanks for sharing the pictures. (At least 2, maybe more, of your pictures were some of the same exhibits that I photographed too--no surprsise!) It was my... well, I think I'm counting correctly, if I can believe it, 43rd annual trip to the Tucson Show! Coming first from Albuquerque, then from Denver. Some things change much, some (to a degree) remain the same.

PostPosted: Feb 18, 2016 12:03    Post subject: Re: Tucson Show 2016

Nice quote Don. For someone who just attended his 54th straight Tucson Show and 30 years on the Show Committee I am continually in awe and appreciative of all the effort expended by our two staff members, the show committee and other volunteers and especially the dealers and exhibitors who participate in the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show.

Through 1971, the Show was held in the cattle barn at the Pima County Fairgrounds and there were one or two motels hosting a few extra dealers. In 1972, the Show moved to the new Convention Center and 26 dealers filled the new Exhibit Hall (now used for set-up and storage) with the wholesale show upstairs. There were three or four hotels from the Desert Inn to the Holiday Inn along the freeway. In the mid-1980's the Show Committee added general retail and jewelry dealers in the arena. In the early to mid 1990's (memory is a little mushy on this date) the City of Tucson built the new facility and the Show Committee moved everything, including wholesale, into this new facility, but not quite filling it all.

As the Tucson Show has grown so have the other venues so now there are between 40 and 50 other "shows" and approximately 4000 vendors descending on Tucson from the middle of January to the end of the Tucson Show around Valentine's Day.

Les, your making me feel old. 1972 or 73 was my first visit to the show. I was lucky enough to drive for Josie Scripps back in those days. Yes the show has changed over the years but I still remember all the fun I had and the people I knew from going. Someday I will make it back. Maybe for the 75th anniversary since I have made both the 25th and 50th.

Thank your for posting this post and glad you enjoyed your first trip out to Tucson.

Continuing with the next 5. I think everyone could've found a top ten (or twenty) from Scott Rudolph's incredible case, but I'll limit it to two.

Impressive specimens Bob!

Your DSCN4503a.jpg should be re-labeled from La Marina (as the label indicates).
Incredible piece... I have seen tens of Euclase specimens from that locality but nothing close to that one.
The confusion between "Columbia" and "Colombia" is a bit frustrating (as always).

Thanks for putting those 10 up. They are proof I miss too much by being tied to a trading room. I look forward to Tucson 2017 when I will have time to look and not have to rush around like a blue tailed fly.

A nice choice of fine specimens, Bob. I think most of them would also fit in MY top ten list ... except for the jeremejevite from Namibia and the Milpillas brochantite - both not species that I like ;-) But the rest, especially that anglesite on the first photo and Wilensky's giant morganite - holy sh.. ;)

PostPosted: Feb 20, 2016 13:12    Post subject: Tucson Show 2016 - The New Finds

Barcelona 02/20/2016

Is funny, I can use the same comment as I wrote past year just changing the texts of the new finds!

Jordi Fabre wrote:
...below I have listed a summary of the new finds I saw and I liked in a year that has been good in terms of new finds. I'm sure that soon there will be published in magazines and other online sites much more information about these new finds...

  • Grandidierite from some place in Madagascar. Yes, Grandidierite! one of the more famous "mythos" of the mineralogy come back to the light and from some place in Madagascar (it was given to me two different localities) Very good crystals, some in matrix of Feldspar and with Schorl were offered in Tucson 2016.

  • Gold! and from two different localities! ;-) A lot of new, very well crystallized and very nice Golds from an previously unknown Brazilian locality: Serra do Caldeirão, Pontes e Lacerda, Mato Grosso, Brazil and a new find in a classic locality: Willow Creek, Nevada, USA, offering silver bearing Golds (the variety named electrum) with very good small specimens and even some fine large specimen.

  • A large pocket of Axinite-(Mn) with related Epidote from Canta, Lima Prefecture, Peru (see: https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=49148#49148 and https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=49041#49041

  • From the indefatigable mine of Milpillas old / new Pyrites (in fact them were find in 2013) with a complex crystallography and coated with a thin film of Bornite and a high number of fine Cuprites with a great luster and reasonable red color. Also some other unusual species like Vésignéite and some other(s) still pending of analysis.

  • New Boleites on Paratacamite from the recent works for preparation for future mining operation in the Amelia mine, Boleo, Mexico

  • Talking about rare species, the new labors in the Mundo Nuevo Mine, Peru gave very fine (for the species) rosettes of Lautite on Tennantite-Tetrahedrite and not too bad Heteromorphite

  • Extraordinary new finds of Silvers and Acanthites in the Hongda Mine, Shanxi Province, China

  • Two new finds in two old / classic localities: Red Cloud with very gemmy Wulfenites and Los Lamentos, Mexico, and more finds of blood red Wulfenite from the Chah Kharboze Mine, Iran

And for sure much more that or I don't saw it or I don't paid attention. Stay tuned, I'm sure that other FMFers or future editions of mineral magazines will give more info...

More to come...

PostPosted: Feb 28, 2016 06:23    Post subject: Tucson Show 2016 - Some personal thoughts

Barcelona 02/28/2016

I would like to find the right tone and not fall into nostalgia but I fear it is inevitable that my comments turn back a little bit to look into the past as this is the year that (finally) I have decided to lower my rhythm a bit and give myself a less stressful Tucson in the future. Well, at least I will try to be brief ... ;-)

I came to Tucson for the first time 30 years ago, back when it was still the Desert Inn with its three floors filled to overflowing with dealers and this discovery was, to me, like a punch in the stomach from the world’s boxing champion. That same year it snowed (a little) in the Tucson City, and I was not prepared for that singular event so I spent most of the time lying on a bed with a high fever and I believed I would die in Tucson. I do not remember well what hotel I was staying in, I only remember the sleepless nights listening to the peculiar sound made by the air bubbles that lived in the air conditioning circuit and had my throat ravaged by the dry climate and fever spending my time spitting blood into the sink in the room.

Why after such a successful start I returned the following year and each and every of the following years and why I'll probably keep going until I cannot make it physically anymore?
Why I have been spending each year a month of my life in Tucson (so a total of 30 months, or two and a half years of my whole life!) exhibiting at so many different venues?
I do not know and nobody knows, the only certainty is that Tucson Show must have some kind of poison that slowly gets affects all of those who are mad about minerals and heals us, but only does so temporarily because every year we need to return to get our dose.

Something is changing in Tucson, or at least this is my feeling. I don’t know what this change is exactly but I feel that sometimes romantic / always epic Tucson is vanishing and that it is being replaced by something different, not better not worse, just different. So I will try to follow that change from a different position than that I had before, in order to follow it better…

What happened in Tucson 2016? :

The pieces that are REALLY top and/or Supertop (“Ikons”) are still sold relatively easily
The pieces that appear to be top but actually are not, are becoming harder to sell
Several top collectors are developing an approach that is much more unusual to their collections named "diversity" ;-)
The wholesale, commercial and everything nice still has an extraordinary turnover, probably more than anyone could ever imagined in the past

Therefore I would say that Tucson should have a long life, even though that its imbalances are still there: too many vendors for the space / time in which the show takes place, excessive inflation of the prices of some specimens and in general, perhaps somewhat weak infrastructure to support such a large business.

The Tucson poison keeps the whole structure standing, it did it for over 50 years and I see no compelling reasons to think that this will change in a short / medium term.

Hurrah Tucson and Hurrah to its poison!

PS: thanks to James Catmur for the translation of this text and make it comprehensible.
