Hi James, I could not help wondering whether the gypsum specimen was part of the pocket the bully stole from you that you had to buy back:-)

Just in case you are interested, this specimen has six hexoctahedral faces on each cube corner. It's a very well presented example of this form.

PostPosted: Nov 12, 2021 09:10    Post subject: Re: James collection

When out in the countryside I cannot resist the urge to check what is on the ground. Some years ago while climbing an old volcano (apparently it erupted about 297 million years ago) I noticed a 'rock' that was wrong for the typical layers around me, so like so many of us I had to pick it up and have a look at it. I then took it home and forgot about it until I recently saw a video from La Palma of a similar rock flying through the air and then rolling to a halt (but that one was larger and still very hot)

I believe it is a volcanic bomb as it shows layers of cooling and cracking. Just a fun find - there clearly are some very small crystals within it as you get flashes from reflections as you rotate it. A quick search suggests it will be an olivine or quartz dolerite
