To me this year’s Tucson Show (and last year’s for that matter) was not very rich in new mineral finds. I did notice a few new items which I will summarize with photos (and in a previous post, Jordi mentioned some other new finds also).

1. There were some wonderful Axinite/Epidotes from Peru – seems that Luis Burillo had the best (as is frequently the case) – they are nice and lustrous but a bit small.

2. I also noted another Axinite find from the Bor Mine that was entirely in the room of, who else, the Axinite-PM guys, Victor and Igor. These were much larger than the new Peru material but lacked the luster and epidote association. Neither of these are any competition to the Polar Ural find of a few years ago.

3. I have to mention a new Pennsylvania find – some VERY lustrous smokey quartzes from the Smokey Mountain Crystal mine in Schuylkill County. The only ones I saw were being handled by Ed Rosenzweig. He had only 3 left from his original group of maybe a dozen or more. OK, I know – but they’re from PA!!

4. The last new find I’ll mention was atacamite (and clinoatacamite) from Peru – the best were handled mainly by Luis Burillo but were also available from the Ramoses. These are deep green and show two distinct crystal habits – the classic “sword” and a twinned form.

I just didn’t think there was much new that would make this show special. Most of the “new finds” were either quite minor or were improvements on previous finds (like the recent cuprites from Milpillas – not really new but definitely better than the past or the new Red River Floor pocket crocoites - excellent but not "new").
