PostPosted: Feb 20, 2016 22:52    Post subject: I need everyone's opinion on this specimen I found.

I was metal detecting for coins in an old ghost town near Tucson, AZ. Near a telephone pole I found what looked to be fulgurite. It was partially buried. It was about 30 yards from the telephone pole. As I took a closer look at the pole, I noticed that there was a black streak burn mark down the middle of it.

When I took the specimen to a Rock & Mineral shop, he said that it looked like a fulgurite as it has the look of being fused with copper wire in it. He went on to say that it was probably a glass insulator from a telephone pole. This makes sense, as I found it near one. He also said that the glass had a blue tinge to it, and that he had never seen such a fulgurite type specimen in his years and travels as a geologist. He went on to say that he's has never even seen anything like it on the internet as well.

Can anybody here identify this specimen with the pictures provided down below.

I agree that it could well be an old broken glass insulator associated with the telephone lines. Also likely is glass slag. Whatever it is, it looks man created and not natural. CHEERS.....BOB

No, I have seen PLENTY of slag. And that's not slag. Even the Geologist said that he saw fusion. Slag does not produce fusion. And I have seen plenty of melted glass too. But none of that melted glass had ANY fusion.

I'd have to agree that it's some sort of slag or man-made material.

Molten glass and slag both are produced by fusion, i.e. melting. If your specimen consists of glass with copper wire in it, it probably is a fused glass insulator. Whether this happened through the pole's being struck by lightning or through a grass/bush fire in an abandoned settlement one cannot tell.

I agree that this most likely appears to be, fused glass from a lightning strike on this telephone pole. Especially with what appears to be the black burned streak down the side of the pole. And, copper or other metal inclusions in the glass, make sense.
