Hi,
Quartz crystals can be found distorted by twisting around an a-axis, perpendicular to the usual c-elongation.
These vicinal crystals can be placed next to another step by step or in a continuous manner, thus creating curved faces.
Ultimately, individuals are no longer discernible and the whole resemble a sugar, as the French say. In Switzerland, these twisted quartz are called Gwindels. They may be partially or totally closed.

Spodumene: unalterable lithic silicate, colored ash, hence its Greek name.
It has the structure of the diopside. It belongs to the group of clinopyroxenes.
It does not form solid solutions (Li atom too small).
Crystals can be large.
There are 2 varieties of gemstones, pink kunzite and green hiddenite

PostPosted: Nov 26, 2016 14:25    Post subject: Re: Munich Show (Mineralientage) 2016 - The New Discoveries

On Munich Show (Mineralientage) 2016 - The New Discoveries Jordi Fabre wrote:
...Let's go to what I have seen mineralogical. As announced, the real new discoveries have been very few, but something new always appears... Apart from the already mentioned Brochantites with or without Chrysocolla and with or without the Atacamite from the Los Azules Mine, Chile, in Morocco Imilchil remains generous and there have been many and varied things found there, highlighted by new spherical Malachite on Chrysocolla, very curious (assuming they really are from Imilchil). Bou Nahas remains prolific and produces among many other things some very nice lemon-yellow Barite with very thick crystals, and also highlighted was the presence for the first time (to my knowledge) of crystallized Cuprites from there. Bouismas and Tamdrost still are giving generously good Silvers and Proustites and Chebka Sidi Said (Aouli) has given very good yellow Fluorite on reddish Quartz and unlike the usual, in large pieces.

An exciting novelty was the presentation of Machinga, a locality in Malawi that although vaguely known in the past, now is being exploited again and giving (for now) excellent Niobophyllites and Eudidymites with thick, well-formed crystals between translucent and transparent. We'll see what will happen in the future but if all goes well it could be a new Mount Malosa.

I would also highlight the recent appearance in the classic Naipa mine, Mozambique, multicolored tourmalines very similar to those of the Santa Rosa mine in Brazil and the reappearance there of world class Stibiotantalites. Also I would like point out the continued presence of very aesthetic Pyrites from the "Atahualpa" level in the Huanzalá mine, Peru. They would surely be the most beautiful in the world if it were not the large amount of damage on the edges of the crystals that occur during the extraction of these specimens...

I'm adding some images of the new discoveries I described on my previous post.

Thank you for posting all these mouth watering pictures Roger. I am now already counting down for next year show.
By the way the next year Munich special exhibition theme is called 'From mine to mine'. Any ideas what they exactly mean with that?

Hi Peter,
No I do not know the secret of the next exhibition.
What I know is that it will be a total success. The thematic exhibition of Munich itself is the worth of the trip. I have never been disappointed since 1977. It was there (and also in Ste Marie) that I learned what minerals were. It was an indispensable complement to all textbooks on Earth.
I would like to read the statements of all the former thematic exhibitions which have magnified the name of Munich.
Roger.

Maybe since Agricola, Central Europe has the cult of miners' work.
Here are some miniatures inserted in bottles. Magic, isn't?

These are some wonderful photos, I especially like the fluorites!

I did notice that one (127-Fluorite_20879_R.jpg) is labeled as coming from the Xiefang Mine. I have seen nearly identical ones that were labeled from the De'an Mine, also in Jiangxi Province. I don't know which of the two localities is the correct one for these unusual fluorites.

Strongly pleochroic iolite can display a blue to violet hue in one direction and pale yellow to colorless in another.
Iolite (gemologist term) is cordierite (mineralogy).
