PostPosted: Apr 07, 2017 07:43    Post subject: Zebra Jasper, What is it and Where's it From?

I'm trying to find out some information about Zebra Jasper aka Zebra Stone, Zebra marble, I've been told so many things about it that I'd really like to get to the bottom of it before I write about it on my website. I've been told it only comes from Rajasthan which I'm not sure is actually true, that it's a type of marble and that it a sedimentary rock which is made up of black and white dolomite.

Any factual information that I can use as a lead to research it further would be greatly appreciated. There's so much clap trap that's been written about this and various other stones online that it's tough to find hard facts about certain minerals.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

Actually you are talking about two different things.
Zebra jasper is a jasp-agate found in India.
Zebra stone/marble is a banded marble from Utah.
The two stones are incredibly similar and you need to touch it to be sure witch one is.

Thanks for the reply, so if I touch the stone, what am I feeling for to determine one from the other?

If you have some experience, you can feel the lustrous, hardness and kind of fracture, otherwise try to test for hardness or make an acid test.

Many thanks, I bought the stone in India in Rajashthan as I have a supplier there so it's likely to be jasper but having done research and seen zebra marble from Utah, I wondered how factual the information was that I had about it.

Thanks again for the explanation.

Here in Australia we also have Zebra Stone or Zebra Rock. Its different again from your example image (sorry I dont have my specimen where I can photograph it) but its as distinctive with its zebra stripes pattern of White/pale cream and reddish browns. its easily carved and can be polished as decorative pieces and inlays and occurs in massive bulk.

While I dont think it's confused with anything else in the world, it make me wonder how many different minerals/rocks have been given the name of zebra stone etc?

Steve,

I've seen photos of zebra stone/rock from Australia, it's a fascinating material and one day I'll get my hands on some. It's not something you see over here in the UK at all.

I have pulled two specimens from my collection which may be germane to this discussion.

The first one is Zebra Rock from Western Australia. It is kaolinite with flecks of quartz, mica and iron oxide.

The second is Gneiss with Garnet from Canada. The Gneiss look very similar to the stone in your pendant. However there is material from Utah that looks like it also.

Thanks for posting those photos, absolutely love that zebra rock! Never seen anything like that at all over here in the UK! :-(

May have seen it in Tucson a few years ago but I'm not sure.
