A local shop has this in the counter. I'd like to buy it but they have no idea what it is. I've never seen anything like it.

To me, it looks like something anthropogenic, maybe a kind of slag or silicon carbide.

At first glance looks similar to Kyanite but it is lacking definition and any real structure. I agree its man made. It looks a lot like the slag off my metal chop saw. Basically small grains fuse at high temperatures and build up under the saw after prolonged use.
