Thanks Texasdigger. I just looked at eBay and did not find. What can you tell us about it. _________________ hogwild |

Looks very unprofessional to me! |

Anyone willing to spend a quarter million $$$ on E-bay, and for something with no warranty no less, needs their head examined ;)) |

Agreed thats a very obvious, bad glue job.
Maybe with the $225,000.00 they can afford a better camera.
The seller needs his head examined as well. He is serious about the price. I messaged him about it.
His response, "We don’t debate or argue with ignorant people...
we have no interest in your likes or dislikes....
But to further enlighten you, given the size and magnificent quality of the tourmalines, the same exact piece would fetch close to 1 million in todays’ market if it were a naturally formed.

For those that do not know "chutzpah" is a NYC euphemism for...........balls!
What I find somewhat interesting in all this is that some very large complex tourmalines and Colorado smoky quartz/amazonite specimens etc are multipully repaired, restored, reenforced and otherwise fixed up. The jobs are professional and look good; then the high end dealers tell all and their high end customers actually do spend the similar $$$ to buy the examples with no regrets. BOB |

Another way to look at it is that they are selling a work of art, not a real mineral specimen, and they openly admit that, so they aren't cheating anyone. What's the price of art nowadays? There's an item in the news today about a painting that sold for $100,000,000...
Makes mineral collecting look like a poor person's hobby ;)) |

Some of the most beautiful, striking tourmaline are indeed repaired.
Look at all the Pederneira clusters. The differences I see are that they are restored to original condition and the repairs are not so evident.
Ill commend him for admitting its man created but the price is off no matter how you look at it. Maybe12K in rough, (sadly, not enough good pics to accurately determine individual value), plus cost of epoxy and labor should not equal $225,000.00.
Oh, I love the "art" angle because it works. Remember the potato photograph that sold for 1 million Euro.... insane. |

Anyone paying such money for such a 'specimen' must suffer loss. There is no remedy for stupidity. _________________ Pierre Joubert

I just deleted the related images. I believe they should be protected by some kind of copyright.
Thanks for the understanding. |

Hi, Pierre, List
Well, I think that it is overpriced, but value is in beholder, so, if anyone bought it, price is correct for him. Despite what I think about.... On the other side, he said clearly that piece is hand-arranged, not as in nature. So, he does not cheat anyone (well, maybe the ones that do not read, but that is not his fault...)
A well known mineral dealer in USA wrote (or said...) that if a mineral is sold, that means that is too lowly priced..... By the way, I bought some of his former pieces from another dealer when I was in NY... And seller priced them very correctly, to my understanding. I continue buying from him (by post.....l)
So, prices are just a question of how much would buyer wish to pay.
Tooled ancient coins sometimes receive higher price than an untouched one...So happened in an European auction, with same type, one untouched and the other adverted as tooled, having the tooled one more or less double selling price after auction...
Things happen. For sad, to my understanding...But still, they happen...
With best wishes

I know some high-end dealers find that unique specimens sell better if they price them higher - not lower. That won't work with many flats of something, but a single piece or a few, even if not really objectively worth a lot more, sell due to snob factor and some assumption that if it must be worth more, because it is priced for a lot. A lot of gullible people around..... |

Hi, Peter
No gullible people, just vanity... or thinking, as you said, that it worth far more...
If you have so many money that a million more or less is nothing, well, thinking is in another way...
With best wishes
