This is the biggest one me and my brother in law found while hiking through the mountains. It was under a bunch of small sandstone pieces that covered the hillside. We found smaller ones with more brown and less white. Is this tourmaline?

Denny1st - what is it about this specimen that makes you think it may be tourmaline?

It looks a LITTLE like some of the eroded albite/perthite I find in S. CA and CO pegmatites, but without hardness, some idea of density, and other information, I don't think anyone can be sure what it is. Not much about it to me looks like tourmaline unless you've seen identified tourmaline from that locality that resembles that. Strange habit for tourmaline, but not totally impossible. Hardness will tell something...as will test with acid. Were there pegmatites nearby? What other rocks were nearby?

Denny, you should refer to the "What is it? - Where is it from?" to review the kinds of tests & observations about properties of the mineral that you should try to ascertain before posting your question, so those of us who read it may have more information to go on, in trying to give you a good answer.

Is the mineral very soft? It looks like it may be--i.e., even soft enough to scratch with your fingernail? If so, gypsum or even talc seem like possibilities (gypsum would be suspected, if you found this within sedimemtary rocks; talc, if in metamorphic rocks). Otherwise, if not quite that soft, one of the zeolite minerals is possible--and in this case, if it were found within volcanic rocks. With any other tests/data info, these are what the appearance suggests to me. Can it be scratched easily with the point of a knife?

For me this looks like a strongly weathered piece of joint-filling calcite.

Thanks everyone. Sorry I can't test them at the moment but I went back to the spot I found them. Here are some pics.
