Our best wishes for the Texan people affected by the Harvey hurricane. All our solidarity from Europe, especially to the numerous mineral lovers from there. We hope the extraordinary Houston Museum of Natural Science survived as well as the HMNS Volunteer Library.

The best for the HMNS and its president Joel A. Bartsch.

JORDI and all other FMF users, I just earlier today started a similar thread on Mindat. So I too wish everyone else down there the best!!

Unfortunately this storm has the potential to cause much damage to the geology and mineral collector community. There are a lot of important collectors and important collections in the Houston area. If any collections were to be damaged, that would be too many. If just 1 collector or Houston area dealer decides against going to the upcoming Denver show due to the storm damage, that also would be very unfortunate. And if any geology department damage occurs at the local universities, that too would be very unfortunate.

Everyone should wish those folks the best! BOB

Hello all. The Houston Museum is okay. There are, however, 125 staff that is dealing with water damage. It is still raining and we wish all to know we are thinking of them.

Tim and Holly Smith are Texas collectors who have suffered water in their home during this time and many people are helping them. I have been in touch with others in the Houston area who, other than no tap water or electricity, are faring well. We are fine, living closer to Dallas, we had no ill effects. I will update as I hear. Thank you.

Really horrible to see on the news what happens in Texas. Living here in the middle of Germany (a very steady area without natural dangers), I can't even imagine natural disasters such as hurricanes (or earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis). I'm really sorry for the many people who lost so much during the last days :-(

Only slightly off topic, but I had a major part of my mineral collection completely inundated in a large flood here. Some minerals that were water soluble were damaged or lost, some that became acidic or basic when waterlogged damaged themselves or others. Most were OK after cleaning - HOWEVER, the damage to the labels was the biggest problem. Lucky for me, I had placed all the labels in plastic sleeves. The ink had run, but most were barely readable, and with my own memory and knowledge [plus a LOT of work], I was able to reconstruct the labels. The lovely mineral display cases were a total loss. Good luck to those in TX.

Whenever I think life is treating me unfairly, I will remind myself of this disaster, many people who lost everything:-( 8 Years ago, we sold our house in Somerset West, near Cape Town. If we had continued staying there, our house would have been flooded twice with a big financial loss. Some of our friends suffered a huge loss, and so did a lot of others. All this is nothing compared to this catastrophe.
