PostPosted: Sep 04, 2017 00:05    Post subject: Garnets in Itadori River near Nagoya (Japan)

Last weekend I went out to check some rumors about a stone plate emerging from a river bedding, that contains garnets. Only indication was a bridge and a river name. So google street view helped me a lot. And finally we ended up under a big rock on the side of the river. The plate was not bigger than 2 meter, but filled with garnets.

They are not so big, about 2mm to 8 mm. If somebody has tips how to clean them up, or polish them, please let me know.

I think you will find that most (all?) of the people that frequent this forum would say that there is no need to clean (or god forbid polish) your specimen. Personally, about the only cleaning i do is with a very plain dish soap (nothing for softening hands, nothing antibacterial, etc, something that is just a mild detergent). If the material can take it mechanically, i scrub carefully with a toothbrush, rinsing the toothbrush often so that particles of one mineral does not scratch a softer mineral. Then i rinse both the specimen and the toothbrush and continue to scrub to make sure i get all the soap off.

Again, good luck and have fun. BTW, those are some nice looking garnets you have there.

Thanks.

I will keep them like they are.

Just a small question about polishing. I tried to polish topaz, it looks shiny, but if you look closely, it still has a little mat milky shine. My last step was polishing with nr 2000 sanding and then use aluminium oxide and leather.

I don't use a lap machine. Only a dremel tool

Any hints?

Thanks

Sorry but this is not a forum for lapidary questions. I suggest you use google to find a forum that can better answer any such questions.

I am waiting for Alfredo to chime in but in my opinion your "garnets" are probably not garnets but likely vesuvianite crystals. Judging by the 2nd photo the symmetry is not right for garnet,

I had the same thought, although the perspective may be deceiving. It could be a garnet dodecahedron modified by a trapezohedron. Some other views would be useful!

Sorry for the misunderstanding about the lapidary question.
My goal is to collect minerals. so some are dirty and need to be cleaned. Sometimes l notice the spot l cleaned is not so shiny as the rest so l polish it. But still l dont get it completely shiny. I mentioned the lap cause l see many people use this to finish polish. I only polish away dirt i just wondered what tool you use

Thanks about mentioning the vesuvianite. seems both occur often together but are difficult to recognize. I try to upload more pictures.

Thanks

Hi to everybody!
One is Gemology On Line! I am quite sure there are also discussions about cutting gem-quality stones as well!
Greetings from Italy by Riccardo.

Both garnet (mainly grossular and andradite) and vesuvianite are found in many japanese skarn deposits, but I'm not familiar with this particular locality, so I can't be much help with this one. I defer to our expert crystallographers.

Better photos might help. If you can zero in on the crystal lower right, that might be conclusive. With respect to polishing crystal faces, any effort that alters the surface is a definite negative for most collectors.

got some more angles for these garnets. Don't misunderstand that it are 2 rocks, not the same one.

Most of the photos are too out of focus but the one that isn't supports my belief that at least one specimen is vesuvianite, the other may be garnet.

Yeah, l'm sorry about the quality of the pictures. I have to use a 55-300 lens. Macro lens is coming up as soon l can.

What kind of device do you usually use for taking pictures?

l still try to make a 3d shape of the crystal, but to see all faces is hard.

Anyway, l will visit the same place back again and try to find a more clear one.

Do garnets occur in clusters too? The strange thing about the rock was that one side was filled with very small yellow brown crystals, not bigger than 1-2 mm. Really everywhere.
But the other side had no shiny crystals. Although when l looked closely, l could see cubic or pyramid faces, about 5-8 mm tall. When l hit the rock with my chisel, a round shaped stone fell out. Mostly with more faces. But the faces were not finished completely. This little balls were not in clusters.

Yes, garnets often occur in clusters. I use a Fuji Fine Pix camera but I do not shoot micros.
