PostPosted: Nov 27, 2017 07:38    Post subject: Pseudomalachite?

We have had this specimen, from somewhere in the DRC, for a while and assumed it was Malachite; that was up and until this morning when I studied it under a loupe. Is the small green to dark green crystals possibly Pseudomalachite and the light blue mineral, Chrysocolla?

I had no reply to my question, but looking at a picture from Ofarcis, I assume that it is pseudomalachite.

What about libethenite? Is the material acid-resistant? Libethenite should not be resistant, like malachite.

Hi Volkmar, It is not acid resistant. I also would like to know, does Malachite ever produce gemmy crystals?

Hello Pierre, to me your specimen also resembles Brochantite.

Hello Heimo. Even though Brochantite is usually found as fibrous sprays, I have seen some specimens that look similar to my sample. There is a good one on sir Jordi's site:

Pseudomalachite looks like malachite. Crystals are very rare and very small. Botryoidal forms often alternate with those of malachite in Katanga.
Its color distinguishes it. It is colored in darker green and slightly bluish.

Beautiful picture Roger. I will be very surprised if my specimen is Brochantite.

The light blue mineral seems to be Chrysocolla.

About the green crystals I believe (as usual ;-) that only a good analysis can say what it is exactly. Anyway, if I should have to say something, I would discard the Pseudomalachite (and the Brochantite) and I would be more inclined to think about Libethenite, although it could be something else.
You can take a look on these Libethenites: Libethenite in "Galería FMF" (Spanish)

Thank you Jordi. It does look similar to this specimen:

To Volkmar, who initially suggested libethenite, and all the others, in particular, Roger, thank you very much.
