PostPosted: Feb 20, 2018 06:28    Post subject: Re: Tucson Show 2018 - Some thoughts

In https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=60599#60599 Bob Harman wrote:
Hi Jordi!

Interesting observations ( https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=60598#60598 ), but not totally unexpected. Wherever there is a large and major mineral or fossil show, over time, there might be many additional small shows springing up.

Are the newer small shows having "dealers" selling all or part of their own (or a friend's) collection? Are the "dealers" buying stuff one day only to flip it at a higher price the next day (phenomenon that has gone on in some long standing venues for years)? Or are these "dealers" simply new ones and additional ones to the longer attending dealers that have populated the established Tucson Show venues for years? Or might they be newer younger dealers just starting out and trying to save a few dealership bucks until they get established?

Like you, I feel this trend certainly makes for an excessively long and widely spread out show. Do you think it negatively impacts all the other long standing venues?

Anyway, all interesting food for thoughts and discussions. BOB

To summarize:

- What I saw were the same classic dealers exhibiting in many more venues than in previous years.

- I did not see the young people who should renovate this hobby exhibit in these new places. In fact some young people who appeared last year at Tucson's New Mineral Show and who brought very interesting pieces, this year were no longer there and I saw them working for other dealers...

- I do not know if these new venues are going to impact or not the classic Shows. In fact my general state is of confusion because this year has been different from what I knew and I am still trying to process those changes.

Gail, I fear you must have mistaken me for someone else: I wasn't in Tucson, actually I never was :-( But I found a photo of guy named Tobi in your show report, but this is another Tobi, not me ;-)

Oh my. I apologize for the confusion! Now that I have a better understanding of which Tobi is which I shall be sure to distinguish!

No problem, Gail ... even Shakespeare said "Tobi or not Tobi, that is the question" ... (I'm so sorry for that pun, just couldn't resist!)

:-)

Okay, THAT was funny!

The Spann Brazilian Case of Tucson 2018

I have attended the Tucson Show for 30 years, Saint Marie aux Mines and Munich for some 35 and 33 years respectively, and mineral shows for 41 years. There are many many more senior collectors than me to have an opinion in this matter, but during my rather limited exposure to world class exhibits at shows, besides many visits to museums and great collectors, each numbering in the 3 digits, I must confess.

No matter what the theme, this case was perhaps the most beautiful and comprehensive theme case from one single collection ever to be put on display at any mineral show!

The quality and spectrum of minerals, all gathered in the past 15 years is nothing less than fantastic and most admirable.

Like Jordi, I know the Spanns well and they are dear friends. What a pleasure that such a sharing couple own these, and yes Gail, you are a true Ambassador in all ways for our pass and hobby.

Big THANK YOU for bringing this for all to see.
A photo of his case should be sold as poster in natural size!

Just a comment. I have noticed that by far the most common error on specimen labels is “tourmaline variety elbaite” or something very similar. This is often seen on dealer’s labels as well as collector’s labels. Tourmaline is NOT a variety of elbaite. Tourmaline is a family of mineral species. Elbaite is a species. It matters.

John,

I had always assumed seeing this sort of label that the intent was to indicate the Tourmaline was the encompassing grouping (family), and that Elbaite (or other colour variant) was the subordinate (variety).

Would a label of "Tourmaline species Elbaite" then be more appropriate?

As a carbonate collector, I am, of course, just an innocent bystander in this kerfuffle :-)

Personally I would favor treating the label issue this way:
ELBAITE - TOURMALINE GROUP
Elbaite is not a color variety of tourmaline. It is a species. Color varieties are rubellite, indicolite. achroite, etc.
