PostPosted: Mar 17, 2018 04:31    Post subject: Stellerite from Mali

I have question about the occurrence of stellerite in Mali (also called a classic locality - which is a term that is still a mystical concept to me) with a quite famous paragenesis of prehnite - epidote - stilbite. There are good visible, rounded aggregates of zeolites from Diamonkara (Bendougou -Bendoukou -Benduko) that have pale or more yellowish color. There are specimens with both color variations and also different crystal aggregate forms. But on the other hand, stellerite belongs to the isomorphous series stilbite–stellerite so visual identification is a nonsense, but such method is provided by mindat ': "Confirmed - Confirmation Methods: Visually Identified". Has anybody confirmed the occurence of both zeolites by X-ray diffraction or other serious methods???

I believe is not analyzed yet, in fact in Mindat: https://www.mindat.org/loc-260798.html is not info (ⓘ) for the Stellerite and there is not recognized yet as valid (only 3 "valid minerals": Epidote - Prehnite - 'Stilbite')

As you well said only a serious analysis allows to recognize one or another species, so for the moment Stellerite from Diamonkara seems to be just a non-proved theory.

Today looks like this 3 valid minerals are Epidote - Prehnite and Stellerite, Stilbite is missing.

Hello again - since a few weeks (or maybe a bit longer, I'm not too sure) one of the mineral dealers is providing that Info:

"A relatively new find from Mali, the spherical "flowerlike" aggregates have recently been confirmed as Stellerite while the bowtie shaped crystals are Stilbites. "
and also:
"the Stellerites were recently identified by x ray, they look somewhat like Stilbite".

I sent of course a private message about details of this research, but still no answer. Any confirmation is more than welcome !
regards
Kristof
