PostPosted: Apr 01, 2018 12:54    Post subject: Is this fluorite?

This is the largest one I have- weighing 13.5 lbs.
It is crystal clear from almost any side viewed. It really has beautiful characteristics while viewing from different angles/sides. I would be disappointed to find out that it isn’t anything of importance, especially since I have others and a few blue ones.
Thanks for any information!

Hi Bill! Do you want to have an opinion from me? I think it's a slag.

Read up about fluorite (note spelling) on Mindat.org, and you will learn plenty to allow you to see why this is not fluorite. You can check other candidate minerals in the same way.

Unfortunately, they do not have a page for glass.

Glass of this sort is quite common, and is often found by people exploring in the woods near their home (or elsewhere). We probably get inquiries of this sort about one every two months on this site, if not more frequently. It's pretty stuff, but it's not a mineral.

Can you tell me how it comes to be ?
I really thought it was something with the straight impressions it has on some sides and how they resemble the formation of a crystal in alignment with each othe and the look of termination in some crystals.

The slag glass is poured into molds or forms that tend to be rectangular so some sides will look regular and planar with 90 degree angles like one would expect with cubic fluorite.

dead give away is the conchoidal fracture patterns...you don't get those in fluorite

plus fluorite is softer than glass...try to scratch this with a nail or the point of a knife...

I’d doesn’t resemble anything like that as far as having been pored into a object or even on the ground or anything. The lines are angular to each other and some are even like a crease that is an inside angle next to a external angle. Is it possible that better close up pics of these characteristics could help support that it isn’t glass slag?

There is only one very small section that is perfectly flat. The rest of the sides are perfectly smooth but slightly rounded or curved - some curved inward and some outward but with no pattern of straightness to them at all.
Any chance it could just be a freak of nature piece?

No, it does not make sense. Without any doubt is glass slag.

First impression was glass. Conchoidal fracture is the clue here. Now please stop beating this poor horse. It's already dead. Let it rest in peace.
