- Old specimen
- Better photos
- I trimmed the specimen and removed much of the quartz layer that covered the specimen
- Due to a wrong locality provided by the vendor and some talks to garnet experts i had to correct the locality

Thank you. Actually i hate trimming minerals on my own because i always fear the one hit too much that tears of crystals or breaks specimens. But this time it worked, i could remove the schorl's matrix and the hessonite's quartz coating successfully :-)

Congratulations, Tobias, but don't assume this will always be the case... Nevertheless, if you ever get wrong you must know cyanoacrylate heals almost everything, provided you don't hide that feature when labelling or publishing photos of the specimen.

Carles, i don't assume it will always be the case - so i will not often do such trimming jobs on my own.

Here's another picture from my "old specimen, better photo" mission. Sorry to do like you, Carles, but i really made some lousy photos in the past, and at least some of my better specimens deserve better ones.

Topaz. Villa Garcia, Zacatecas, Mexico. 32 x 18 x 16 mm, largest crystal 9 mm.

Very nice your new spessartine. Good contrast with the white matrix. By the way, what is the matrix made of? I think it must be quartz but am not sure.

No, it is feldspar. There are very tiny quartz crystals among the spessartines, but the matrix is microcline.

Did i ever mention that i'm addicted to Namibian minerals? ;-)

Smoky quartz (with a growing structure nearly reminiscent of a gwindel AND with some sceptered crystals) grown on a large brownish orthoclase crystal. Lattice quartz occurrence, Karibib District, Erongo Region, Namibia. 110 x 100 x 85 mm.

I'm glad that you are as I get to see more specimens from this region via your super collection !

Although I don't think Hohenstein is correct, Hohenstein is a famous peak climb, no minerals are mined on it, it is to the right of the Hohenstein that minerals are found ... see this topic on mindat https://www.mindat.org/forum.php?read,6,178564,178984#msg-178984

Hi Debbie,

nice to please you with my specimens :-)

I know there's much confusion about the localities in the Erongo Region, but my information about this smoky quartz on orthoclase pictured above is that it comes from Farm Brabant which belongs to the Hohenstein massif. I have no reason to doubt this because i know the vendor for many years from the Marburg Mineral Show and i can trust him. It was my mistake yesterday that i only wrote Hohenstein here, sorry!

But sadly i can't edit my post with the smoky quartz anymore. Maybe one of our admins could upgrade the locality information to: Farm Brabant, Hohenstein massif, Erongo Mountains, Erongo Region, Namibia ...?
