That's more than ok. From an objective point of view, the one with the black background is for sure the best photo, most others would agree with you. As the collector who owns and "loves" this specimen, the photo from the display cabinet is more appealing to me, nevertheless I know that this photo hasn't the best quality. It's just a subjective thing ;-)

For keeping it in a showcase I surely agree. But to be published in a book (if ever) the black background should be used.

Definitely! But I don't suppose this specimen will ever make it into a book ;-)

Tobi,

These photos are better (or much better) than the previous ones. It sounds like you finally love the black background. And your painfully acquired experience in taking mineral shots has improved a lot after many years of practicing. Keep the hard work.

Thank you, Carles! And indeed it was you and the discussion about the white or black background for the Kelly Mine smithsonite and the sphalerite from Krushev Dol Mine (previous page) that made me think about using dark background and improving some of my rather bad photos. I'm glad it worked :-)

But don't expect it to work with an isolated crystal of schorl :-)

I don't ;-) There are several specimens in my collection that I still haven't photographed because it never works. This one here was also rather hard, the photo is not really good, but it was the best of nearly 100 attempts :-( Many different minerals on a specimen make it really hard to take a good shot ... nevertheless another chapter of "old specimen - better photo" (Fluorite from Namibia):

ErongoFLUO.JPG

Indeed risky, many galena crystals fell off and I didn't expect a good result, but I was really happy that the best part of that rock survived :-)

Here's a new specimen from Peru:
