PostPosted: Apr 27, 2009 18:57    Post subject: Re: Gail Spann's write up of the Rochester Mineralogical Symposium, 2009

A brief note on the Friday afternoon lectures. They are all fifteen minute lectures, with slide shows or power point presentations.

The first was Van King with the Ultraviolet light examination of worldwide tourmalines.

Fifteen minutes later was R.Morgan presenting "An initial enquiry into the site-specific deposition of minerals on calcite."

Romania:it's mineral richness and beauty was next. It was presented by M. Lupulescu.

Followed by Chemical composition and zoning of garnets from several Quebec localities.
That was presented by G. Poirier.

Two noteworthy occurences exposed during highway construction, Hull Township, Gatineau County, Quebec was presented by P.M. Belley.

Ray McDougall presented Collecting copper crystals at Mamainse Point,Lake Superior, Onatario.

A New Hampshire mineral species display was presented by T.J. Mortimer.

A mineralogical and historical stufy of the McLear pegmatites, DeKalb Junction New York was presented by R.W. Munschauer II.

And the list goes on, I am sure you can follow up by going to the website about the RMS.

Thanks for putting up these pictures Gail. Very useful for those of us that can't travel very often for mineral related activities.

I wonder if there is a way to get hold of Van King to see if he'd let me see his slides. I have a fluorescent tourmaline that is reputed to be from Afghanistan, and I've been seeking to learn more about it.

Hi Matt, I am sure you can find Van's info on line. I don't have it myself, but he is also a regular poster on Mindat, you might PM him there also.
( Private Message for those who don't know what PM means. )

One of the reasons that I, painstakingly, put photos and write ups out into the internet world is to entice people to shows so they can enjoy meeting other like-minded people. There is a warm camaraderie out there, and the internet often keeps us from remembering that.

Alright, off my soapbox and on with more photos as I sip my hot chocolate....
