The one thing that I want to show about this event is the great ability to learn many things from the experts. Steve and Helen Chamberlain put on a top notch symposium and you can see how it made it to the 36th event. I believe Bill Pinch started it all those years ago and, eventually, Steve and Helen started to run it. I loved the Canadians and the local folks who had amazing minerals from their areas. The really fun auction they did on Saturday evening....photos to follow from that.
Oh my, and the bowling beer cans with topaz crystals....

Ah, Saturday. I was a bit nervous, had been up late putting the fnal touches on my presentation entitled Women and Minerals, the untapped market.
I had been adding last minute photos of the ladies I met at the symposium, to add a personal touch to my power point.
All went well, I was fine after a minute or so and calmed down and had fun in my talk.
It was well received and made a point that many dealers talked to me about after.

The various presentations were wonderful all during the day, and then the fun began with the evening auction. This was at dinner, and it was a really fun time.

PostPosted: Apr 30, 2009 08:11    Post subject: Re: Gail Spann's write up of the Rochester Mineralogical Symposium, 2009

The cake. The very famous cake at that.

There is this lovely and delicious cake that is brought in new, every year, and one bids on it. Well, the table occupied by Jeff Collins won it. They slice it up, share with the table and then re gift it to be auctioned again. Well, Frank and Wendy Melanson won it the second time, so we all had a lovely slice with the rich raspberry sauce included. When done, they re gifted it back and it was won, again, by Frank and the leftovers were then given to the auction crew.
What fun as you had people bidding crazy money for this cake that WAS beautiful at the start and downright picked over at the end!
All in good fun, and the proceeds go towards the show and its various expenses.

PostPosted: Apr 30, 2009 08:48    Post subject: Re: Gail Spann's write up of the Rochester Mineralogical Symposium, 2009

...Seems about 20 years ago Russ Behnke found himself bowling in the hall of the hotel with a topaz crystal. Well, that tradition is revived this year with an auction of the materials needed to bring that tradition back. I heard the story, but it was a bit fuzzy.....the word sober was NOT what came to mind!

Linda, come join us next year? We are going back to Rochester, I like the down to earth feel of the event.
I finished downloading the last camera today, and got some great shots of John Betts talk on Minerals of New York City, fascinating!!!!
The historic photos were enthralling too, imagine New York City before it became so widespread?
