I copied below the text that I got with the announce of this bad new:

Dear Colleagues,
it is with enormous sadness and great regret that I pass on the message below. I do not need here to reiterate all that Ernie contributed to the science of mineralogy and to CNMNC and its predecessors.

Dr. Ernest "Ernie" Nickel was born in Louth, Ontario, Canada, on 31 August 1925. He contributed to our knowledge of the mineralogy and origin of economic mineral deposits and for many years he dedicated service to the International Mineralogical Association's (IMA) Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names (CNMMN), now the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature, and Classification (CNMNC)
