Thanks a lot for sharing. Wonderful pics. It isn't very common to see the original mines or the people extracting minerals by themselves.

Please, could you post the measures of the pieces?. I suppose they are babingtonite and prehnite -the last one with a beautiful range of colors-.

Best wishes, xiè xiè

Antonio

HI Antonio
I am sorry. Maybe I have past the time of edit. So I don"t know how to edit the pictures now.
The specimens size is about:
pics43: 5+4+4cm
pics41: 11+5+5cm
pics40: 12+5+6cm.
I guess the last picture"s colour is not natural. I think the prehnite would turn into yellow from green after a long time

你好 Taoxue
When I was a student I arranged a study tour for 48 students and our geology professor to Tsinghua University and Beijing surroundings. We continued to Japan, S Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand. Your English is much better than most of our Chinese!
Arabic, Chinese, Russian are much more difficult languages! It is very nice to meet you here. Mostly we see only Chinese mineral dealers in Europe and other western shows.

We all LOVE to see your locality photographs!!! There is nothing better than field colelcting, and only then you realize how fantastic specimens are which are offered on the world market for a days salary!!! Most colelctors will only find a few of such quality in a lifes time unless one is very very active and spend long time, many times and great effort, patience in one deposit. Best regards Peter

Hi Taoxue,

I strongly agree with Peter. Don't worry, your English is ok. It's communication what worths.

Nobody can edit his post if anyone has written an answer. If you feel confident with your English, please share with us more details about your extracting and mining activity: for example I would love to know the altitude, the way to the finds. In general how chinese minerals are mined.

Thanks in advance. Best regards,

Antonio

PostPosted: Mar 11, 2010 09:32    Post subject: Re: Babingtonite mine

My dream was alrready when I was 3-4 years old (or young I should say) to explore the world, see volcanoes, forests, mines, architecture, mountains, cultures. But no matter where you live it is hard work, saving and prioritizing, what one choose to do.
As we were students it was very tough to get money for this BIG trip. Never before at my University there had been so many participants and never such a long extensive trip. So plan one, get sponsors, plan two get very very inexpensive airline ticket, bus and hotel package. Everybody were laughing - impossible!!! Crazy dream!!! But we did it!

I agree w Antonio, we love to hear your stories, see images. And I agree with you, this site is having many very good and interested people willing to help fellow colelctors.

Taoxue
Welcome from me also, your additions to the forum have, at once, expanded our experience. At one time the Lane Quarry, in Westfield Ma. was a premiere location for babbingtonite. It was also where I began my interest in minerals at age 7, having found prehnite and calcite in the crushed traprock in my dad's driveway, and tracing it back to it's source. Alas, your neighborhood has become the place for the blackest of black and biggest of big babbingtonites, but another blasting season is upon us, so who knows and luck to all.

PostPosted: Mar 12, 2010 01:11    Post subject: Re: Babingtonite mine

Follow your encourage, I decide to have a try to explain the details of the babingtonite mine for my foreign friends .
The mine is located in yongshan zhaotong, not in qiaojia. Maybe that is only dealer"s lie. I didn"t hear qiaojia output babingtonite at all.
Zhaotong"s altitude is about 3000M . The place where output babingtonite is very cliffy. The first time I went there nearly lost my life.
As I know , both Zhaotong and Meigu are all not far away from Yangtze. I guess maybe the babingtonite‘s form has some relations to the Yangtze.
The crystal cave is very interesting . Every crystal cave"s distance is nearly same .
Experienced miners can find them easily. But only a few caves have big babingtonite.
Most of them are prehnite.
My English is bad .But I am studying hard now .
