I'm seeing some iridescence in the freshly broken half. Do you have any information on the streak, hardness, SG? It looks somewhat like the marcasite concretions that sometimes contain pyritized fos ...

It may be bloedite (whitish) with krohnkite (blue).

Nice post, Tobi. You're lucky that you can still return to the Marburg museum. My first experience with a museum collection was at the Academy of Natural Sciences, in Philadelphia, PA. Alas, Philis ...

Your calaverite appears to be coated with chalcedony, which is pretty common at Cripple Creek/Victor. For me, the photo isn't clear enough to show alteration to gold.

Some people at Penn State did experimental work on environment and pyrite habit. I don't know that it helps with the varied habits in a small area, but here's a reference:

Murowchick, J., and H.L. ...

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I forgot to mention that the crystals are somewhat magnetic (with an ordinary magnet). The specimen I saw at Denver was so expensive that I didn't want to try any ...

PostForum: What is it? - Where is it from?   Posted: Sep 26, 2021 16:54   Subject: Question about an old specimen
The specimen shown in the photos has been in my collection for over 40 years. It came from a collection that, unfortunately, had become pretty badly mixed up. The label that came with it called it & ...

This appears to be a specimen of baryte (cream colored) and vanadinite (dark rust-red colored) from Mibladen, Morocco. The little crystals on the back might be pyromorphite; they're a little blurry.

That's true, of course, and it illustrates why this kind of discussion isn't very useful without more information.

I agree with Joseph. Apparently, the garnet (?) is partly surrounded by light colored material that is fluorescing, and that could be microcline.

Can you give us any information about its hardness? Locality? Is the last photo just a strong light, or is it a LWUV (it looks like it might be a Convoy)? If not, does it fluoresce?

I was able to break this crystal into two fragments, preserving the termination. I sent the bottom half to John Attard, who completed an XRD analysis (attached), which indicates that it's quartz. No ...

How about sphalerite? It should have a pale tan to brown streak and 6 directions of cleavage (seldom easily counted). The "other" mineral could be a break-down/alteration product of sphale ...

Unfortunately, the first step in identifying a smooth pebble or cobble is to break it. This gives you an idea of the texture, which can't readily be seen on the outside. Then, to identify most rocks ...

I tried scratching a very flat rhombohedron face on a "Herkimer diamond", and the unknown mineral left some powder and a VERY faint scratch.
