I agree. It looks more like malachite after azurite to me (but, admittedly, I don't remember seeing well developed dioptase with well developed azurite crystals).

From my experience, fluorite from the Sunnyside mine often occurs as big (as opposed to tiny on this piece) pale green crystals, and the rhodochrosite from there typically (though not always) has a mo ...

PostForum: Micros & Macros - Images of Minerals   Posted: Aug 24, 2024 17:34   Subject: Fluorite twin from Colorado
A friend, who is a faceter, recently gave me this specimen from the south side of Mt. Antero, in the Sawatch Range of Colorado. The person who found it wanted him to cut gemstones from it (!!), but, ...

It would help to know the hardness and other physical properties. It looks wet; how does it look dry? To me, it looks like iron-stained quartz.

I'm having trouble seeing the angles you've measured on the pictures. In the second photo, the sample looks like a hexagonal prism with one side broken and a combination of a hexagonal prism and a ba ...

On Mindat, this is listed as not an approved mineral species. It seems to crop up periodically. I have a specimen and have labeled it "alkali beryl". Is this acceptable?

Probably muscovite. It would help if you would clean it up.

Robson: I think you get the point. Yes, it would be helpful if you post a photograph of your crystal. It would also be helpful to break the crystal, but I'm sure you won't want to do that!!

Miller indices are just a "shorthand" way to describe features of crystals. Rather than saying that topaz has a single perfect cleavage direction that is perpendicular to the c axis, it's f ...

Whether it's necessary to learn about crystallography depends on how serious you are about adding to your identification skills and whether you care about the "whys" of many mineral properti ...

Roger, That looks too good to be natural. Am I wrong? It would be interesting to know many carats per ton?

The photo is a bit unclear, but it looks to me like iron-oxide staining on quartz. Staurolite usually occurs as well formed crystals (porphyroblasts) rather than irregular masses.
