The closeup shot 14-06-28 looks like a calcite crystal with the c-axis being where the bright spot is and the trigonal morphology around it.
Could the saltiness just be a coating from exposure to an ...

Quartz does take this habit sometimes. I've heard the nickname of 'saber quartz' for that. Two opposing prism faces are very narrow or completely missing causing it to have a pseudo orthorhombic appea ...

Several years ago I bought one of these for the fluorite inclusions (interesting fluorite habit) and later recognized it also was a Japan Law twin. Perhaps the smaller crystal has that orientation too ...

I'm enjoying your quartzes very much, particularly the lattice pieces,'gitterquartz'.. The Baveno twin explanation was new to me. I'm interested in quartz-feldspar epitaxy. Do you know of anything wr ...

How about Spodumene. I have a couple of pieces that have etching striations that run that way. There doesn't appear to be any from that area in the photos on Mindat. but maybe...

Thanks John,
I'm actually dealing with a candy red coating. At this point Ive gotten better examples of the same crystallography and will probably not bother to try to remove anything.

I'm sure the German Lapis has covered these at one time or other, either in the magazine or perhaps in a special book.
There are also Swiss periodicals - hard to find.
Good luck,
