PostForum: FOR BEGINNERS: What is it? Where is it from?   Posted: Apr 07, 2022 22:19   Subject: Is this quartz or polylithionite?
I had an xrd analysis done on this specimen to help ID it. I had them run the two different colors separate. According to the analysis the brownish area comes up as 98% quartz and
2% corundum and th ...

I don't have a clue as to what the test picks are made of but all the ones that I've seen used look like the ones in the photo below. I've had a few specimens tested by geologist and gemologist and th ...

I thought the hardness was a bit high too, but it was confirmed by two geologists, if you try to scratch it with a #7 test pick it will just leave a silver mark that you can wipe away with your finger ...

I've taken this stone into museums, universities and even to about 3 different rock/mineral shows, and no one can say for sure what this is. When they first see it, most will say it's some sort of alt ...

The cross might perhaps be a "Japan-law twin", like these: https://www.mindat.org/photo-656770.html
Cool, thanks very much for the info.

Just curious, what crystal shape would that little cross be classified as, would that be what's called a twin?

A drop of vinegar would solve the problem.
But I doubt that Mr. Ken has kept those crystals for such a long time.
I was crushing the pyrite to do some acid testing and I have seen them from time to ...

PostForum: FOR BEGINNERS: What is it? Where is it from?   Posted: Apr 02, 2022 22:41   Subject: Why would crystals be inside of pyrite
I've come across several small crystals, these were found inside of pyrite that I was crushing to use in acid testing. They are less than one mm in size and less than half a mm in height. I have no id ...

I looked at a lot of green mineral searching for a match and never came across epidote. Looks like a good match so I do think you may be right, cool, thanks.

This stone looks like it two types of minerals that make up one stone. It almost looks as if part of this stone has morphed, how common is this? I'm not sure as to what to label this stone as. Any ide ...

I can't find anything that looks like this stone. It appears to be a piece of quartz that has undergone some sort of modification. It's the strangest looking quartz I've ever come across, anyone ever ...

You're right about there being a lot of magnetite in that area, I do recall seeing a good deal of it around there. Thanx for the reply.

These stones all have a hardness of about 3.5 so I think they are serpentine. That last stone has a very odd shape, took me a while to figure it out. I've read that the magnetism is caused by magnetit ...

I thought for sure this was some sort of paint, but you can't scrape it off, can't burn it off, and it has no reaction to acid. You have to pry it or chisel it off and when you do, some of the quartz ...
