PostForum: Minerals and Mineralogy   Posted: Sep 03, 2024 22:12   Subject: Gold nugget formation from earthquake-induced piezoelectricity in quartz
Thought this was interesting. The abstract:

Gold nuggets occur predominantly in quartz veins, and the current paradigm posits that gold precipitates from dilute (<1 mg kg−1 go ...

Could be apatite. Are there and small broken xtals that you can remove and use for harness, etc tests?

My initial reaction is marcasite, but that is not listed on mindat for this mine. Perhaps it is one of the platy minerals like molybdenite or polybasite, but those are just WAGS.

Two things:

1) With the confidence of someone who has only seen one fuzzy picture, I don't believe you have hematite, even with your streak test. If you care a lot about identifying this rock, you ...

Why do you think this is hematite ore? Have you had any analyses done? It looks like a plutonic rock to me with some iron staining.

I read Ed Conway's Material World substack, and his current topic is about running out of malachite, at least as a lapidary material. Is this true?

You seem to be worried that you may have been exposed to something unhealthy by cutting one specimen of hyalite opal. I certainly wouldn't worry about it, and since the specimen is gone and you have ...

Whether this is a "Stellar Beam" Calcite or not, we cannot tell you. Stellar Beam is some new age, mystical term, and we like to stick to science here.

As to whether it is calcite, it ce ...

Your piece looks like either quartz or a carbonate like calcite. If it is quartz, it will scratch glass and will not fizz in acid. If it is calcite it will not scratch glass and it will fizz in acid ...

I do not want to click on links I don't recognize from people I don't know, so please post the pictures.

Are you sure these are pseudomorphs and not just corroded crystals of some kind. If they are pseudos of some bowtie habit, it could be a zeolite like stilbite, but the pictures don't make me confiden ...

I don't see any reason to assume that these rocks are mono-mineralic. It looks like some sort of clastic rock or corroded igneous rock with a coating of cryptocrystaline quartz on one side. I am not ...
