Couldn't help but add something about spodumene/kunzites. Olelukoe, you say "naturally etched floater". Not really sure how one would classify a spodumene as a floater or even know. I have had pass through my hands more spodumenes/kunzites/hiddenites than most folks have and one thing I have noticed from handling and looking at so many is just about all seem to be "floaters". Not broken off or what have you but having both ends etched to look like floaters. What I think happens is most peg pockets rupture and tyhe crystals get broken and scattered about in the bottom of the pocket and from there they etch themselves and the broken end to look like floaters. 95% of all peg pockets get ruptures or flash and scatter things about and due to spodumenes easy solubility to acids otr what have you they etch the broken ends to look like floaters. When I would get say 10 or 15 kilos of spodumene crystals each time all but say one or two would have etched on both ends to make what ever end was the attachment point indistinguishable. So, they seemed like floaters, all of them, but I think it was due to the etching.

Oleg, your specimens and photos are truly outstanding. Congratulations on a great collection. We have a similar background, I also have a degree in Geology/Geophysics and spent most of my career as a structural geophysicist. Thanks for sharing your collection with the forum.

PostPosted: Dec 16, 2010 13:23    Post subject: Re: Collection of Oleg Lopatkin

I love the specimen form the Oceanview in Pala, California. Actually, I love the Oceanview Mine. I go down there several times a year to do their fee dig and know the owner, Jeff, and crew well. They are very active on facebook now and post pictures of the people at their fee dig and of the new specimens they are finding. They are into a very rich section of the pegmatite right now.

I actually found a 5 cm beryl on their tailing pile last year. The color was pale so I had put it in the bucket where I gather quartz specimens to clean later and use for the children's program of our rock club. Jeff was walking by the screening tables and grabbed it out of my bucket. He said it was from the "49-er pocket". It has about 20% with very pale aquamarine color and a smaller section with pale morganite coloration. It has slight damage to the edges of the crystal but is otherwise intact and has a few tiny quartz sidecar crystals. Not bad for the $60 fee.

PostPosted: Dec 17, 2010 06:08    Post subject: Re: Collection of Oleg Lopatkin

Unfortunately Ocean View is so far from Russia and here for example, cuprite specimen from Rubtsovsk mine, for 50 usd you can get .... that the international market will be cost several hundred dollars... And here, in Russia, specimens from Pala, Himalaya and Ocean View mines is too rare on local maket...

Yours faithfully,

Oleg
