Wow Pete!
John White is correct: the sphalerite in fluorite is amazing! I cannot believe that you can take such a great photo of a specimen that is less than 1 mm wide. Fantastic work! I like all of the others specimens and photos too, but that particular one really gives me an appreciation for micros.

Thanks for your posts.

Pete's photos are an excellent illustration of why some of us (including me) think micromounts are generally more interesting, more beautiful and more impressive than cabinet specimens. (Of course, it also doesn't hurt that I can actually afford to buy a few really good ones, whereas I can only afford mediocre cabinet specimens.)

PostPosted: Jan 22, 2011 17:14    Post subject: Re: A mineralogical trip through the states of USA - Ohio

Thanks for all the praise for my images. I feel like I stole the Ohio show, which was not my intent. There are many superb macro specimens of celestite, calcite, fluorite, and sphalerite with wonderful color and interesting crystal forms, only a few of which you've seen. Sorry that I and others have not been able to fill out this category more completely.

I might also mention the pyrite from the Duff Quarry, which has an amazing and confusing range of unusual forms that generally suggest a football (European style). I don't have any digital images, but these specimens are common and several descriptions have been published. My own is old but useful:

Richards, R.P. 1987. Pyrite crystals from the Duff Quarry. Mineralogical Record 18: 391-398.

Unfortunately, it does not appear to be available on the web.

Here is a 1.3 mm sphalerite crystal, also from the Bluffton Stone Co. Quarry, Bluffton, Ohio. Purple fluorite and white dolomite crystals also occurred in the same fracture. I collected this on a trip in May 1989 with John Medici.

PostPosted: Jan 25, 2012 19:05    Post subject: Re: A mineralogical trip through the states of USA - Ohio

I just tried to attach from a PowerPoint file which seemed to not work. Here is an attempt from another file. Fluorite needles were found several times at Delphos, always in petroleum-filled pockets, and also at Lima, Ohio (same limestone formation). Lima also produced a couple of fist-size pockets of fluorite that had unusual rounded edges. The Delphos quarry now seems to be idle, at least for the time being. The rock layer that produced the fluorites shown rises toward the west end of the quarry (the latest blasting direction) and has been eliminated, but the underlying rocks, now in the upper layers, have produced some nice bicolor fluorites (yellow/purple). Sizes will be estimates for some of the pictures shown. I'm not sure of the status of the Lima quarry.

It's great to see this picture again, John. To give a little quarry history, it had been closed to collecting for many years due to a death (a former worker drove a recreational vehicle off a quarry wall by mistake); Pete Richards wrote a letter and the insurance company (surprise!) let him and me collect. You were in the Columbus, OH club and also went up there with me. We were very lucky to enter at that time since the quarry direction went away from that nice fluorite/sphalerite area after that, producing similar material, but sporadically. Here is another sphalerite inclusion for you and Pete.

Hi John,
Thanks for posting more about Bluffton. I still have some nice micro material available from there. It was a great day collecting with you. It was also nice that some of the Bluffton
pieces had dolomite crystals, sphalerite crystals and fluorite crystals all together.

I'll try to get some pictures up.

Thanks also for posting those incredibly interesting fluorites. I love to see such interesting puzzles.

Cheers,
John
