We had the pleasure of Rock Currier's company this weekend and he did a slide show for the MAD group. In it he had great photos of a desolate salt bed with an "island" in the middle. Apparently there is a woman who found an eagle and nursed it back to health.
Rock said that he and Alfredo took a while to get used to this eagle landing on them. It seems that it loved people and never stuck its talons in their head or shoulders, but it was still a bit unnerving to have this very large bird land on you unexpectedly.
Rock is the one who took the photo of Alfredo used as his avatar! And all this time I thought it was a vulture!

Rock Currier's histories are in my opinion one of the funniest pleasures on the mineral world. So well wrote and so easy to read!

When I see his signature on an article, I'm definitely reader of it.

You are so right Jordi!
He was here for dinner yesterday and he had time to really look over our collection. What a delight to have this wonderful man in our home.

Gail,
www.minrec.org/pdfs/TheMineralogicalRecord_ElDesierto.pdf
(link normalized by Jordi)

for a better picture of the eagle (and Alfredo).
I enjoy Alfredo's articles too.
BTW: The (newly formed) Piney Woods Gem & Mineral Society meets the 4th Wednesday of each month (except December- Banquet), 7:00 pm, at the Carriage Inn, 2805 Lake Rd., Huntsville, Texas.
Once we get better organized I hope to have invited guests...

Kevin, I love the name of Piney Woods Gem and Mineral Society!
I was the Asst. Race director for the Huntsville mountain bike classic at Huntsville state park for many years. I won first place in a race there and they awarded me a huge trophy, then they called out my name as the winner of a new mountain bike in the raffle. It was a GOOD day for me!
I went on to assist in the race after that.

Those piney woods are just beautiful. The way they smell on a warm day is like heaven!

I think we did good on the name.
Tomball is a nice little town with lots of antique shops, but is quite a long bike ride from Huntsville. Surely you didn't...
I have a friend who lives in Tomball in a house built about 1924 and has a grave in the backyard.

I used to bike, on a regular road bike, to Huntsville and back on a Sunday, with friends along too.
It was not unusual for me to bike 200K in a day.
NOT on the highwheel though, the longest I did on that is 100k ( 62 miles ) in 7 hours and ten minutes.

Tomball was my home town for 25 years, I was the chair of the parks board and had my framing shop/art gallery business there for 23 of those years.
Served on all the school committees and was very active in the Main Street merchant assoc.

I collected bicycles then, and still do. I am a collector by nature.
( 45 bikes in our fleet. )
