New York the "Empire State"

To lead the New York State I'm pleased to publish one of the multiple images downloaded by Glenn Rhein in the amazing thread: "New find of minerals from New York" about the recent discovery of a lot of minerals in his property.

Thank you Glenn!

One of the most interesting occurrences for graphite crystals in new York is the Gouverneur Talc Company #4 quarry (Valentine property) in Harrisville, NY. The marble there hosts a wide variety of graphite morphologies ranging from well-formed tabular hexagonal crystals to spherical aggregates. One particular piece of calcite showed graphite crystals that showed late-stage layer-by-layer growth of graphite (note the growth spirals) overgrowing earlier-formed graphite crystals from the edges toward the center (a,b). The earlier-formed crystals often have a frosty luster (a) but occasionally showed remarkable stellate dendrites (snowflake) patterns on the surface (b-c). Image (d) is of the same crystal as (c) using Nomarski differential interference contrast microscopy. John A. Jaszczak specimens and photos (345-3-4, 345-02, 345-05, 346-04).

The green fluorite is unlike any I ever ran across collecting in Lockport. I grew up in western New York, Hamburg which is south of Lockport, and did a fair amount of collecting at what was then called the Frontier Dolomite Products Quarry. All I ever saw was colorless simple cubes as shown in this photo.

In case anyone mistakenly thought that New York only has pretty minerals, here is a rare amphibole, fluoropotassichastingsite, from its type locality, the Greenwood mine. I love black minerals with long names.

Dear Luiz-
Sorry that I didn' t put a size. I am embarrassed that I also failed to include the size in the Rocks & Minerals article about them (R&M 84 (2009) 502-519). They crystals are between 1 and 2 mm across.
Thanks!
John

In addition to well-formed hexagonal single crystals, graphite occurs in spherical aggregates of platy crystals that can be fairly coarse, or very compact. The compact versions probably grow by a different crystal-growth mechanism. Here are examples of each.

The green fluorite is most likely from either Macomb, New York, or Muskellonge Lake, New York, and not Lockport, NY. My husband and I lived in that region for many years and he collected from the Macomb locality several times when it was accessible.
I hope this information is helpful for you.

My "duck" head quartz specimen. The calcite has unknown inclusions that might be marcasite.

Herkimer Diamonds with Metal inclusions such as Marcasite and Pyrite are very rare. Amongst these crystals it is even rarer to find Pyrite and the Rarest to find Fully Formed Pyrite Cubes. These almost never occur, and even if you know where to look you can go years without finding one, Marcasite, while still rare is more common.

This specimen features Fully Formed, Bright Gold Pyrite Cubes, completely encased within a floater of radiant gem quality, Herkimer Quartz, This makes for quite the combination aesthetically.

You can gaze into this HUGE gem for hours and never see it all. Its likes its own universe inside thishuge jewek. The quartz is RADIANT and FLAWLESS so you can really see this intricate details of this Marcasite/Pyrite City! Not a fracture to throw it off. The Quartz preserved this delicate metal for 500 million years and now we can still gaze at it in its origional splendor.

In addition to all the goodness mentioned there are also two Calcite crystals on this specimen, which make it even more rare and "collectable". One of these crystals is actually BELOW the surface of the Quartz due to a divet created by the marcasite!!!

There is a geologialy important moment, crystalized. I envision this GEM forming in a split second, the Pyrite Cubes seem to be "birthing" and crystaling as they emerge from the marcasite. Somehow this occurance was encased with the Herkimer Quartz.

A truely Unique and breathtaking specimen from good ol' NY state :)

Classic American Locality - Not much available from this location. I had to hunt this one down and harvest it from the Earth myself in order to get a good specimen from Kingston, NY :) Well worth the effort as I hit a good sized pocket while there, now I can share and help fill gaps in other collections.
