I think your tourmaline 1-IMG_0192.JPG is very likely from Stak Nala. Just compare with that one. They are close sisters!

Hello Carles.

I think that you are correct. I have others like this one from Stak Nala. My internet service is down today. Can you make the correction. Thanks.

Regards

Don

Michael,

Sorry for the duplicate response. Maybe showing my age.

Anyway I was thinking earlier this afternoon about how organized your collection is. I must be psychic. I told my wife that so far I have organized my collection into two large categories, those specimens that are upstairs and those that are downstairs. That is as far as I have taken it so :-)

Regards,

Don

Some of the older specimens in my collection are from Australia. I have had a fascination with opals, SiO2•n(H2O) for a long time. I guess you could call me an Opalholic. I had the privilege of studying opal cutting techniques with two great instructors, Sarah Lee Boyce and Joe DePietro at the William Holland School of Lapidary Arts. I also had two great metalsmithing instructors, Dan Haga and Jim Richardson at that school.

Way back when, a person could stop by Chris Wright's place in Hot Springs and go through a bin with boulder opal rough. It was sold by the pound. That was okay because about 99.99% of it was ironstone matrix. I suspect that possibly as many as a dozen people have high-graded it before it got to the bin but every now and again Chris would put back a piece for that special person. Unfortunately, more often than not, I was usually not that person.

Specimens from Australia. A specimen from Koroit. Koroit opal is a form of boulder opal.

According to Fred Ward's book, Opals, manuscript proofread by John S. White, Koroit is only a tiny spot on some maps, a two-to-three hour dirt road drive northeast of Yowah.

Specimens from Australia. Pineapple and Manganocalcite.

Excerpt from Opals, by Fred Ward, manuscript proofread by John S. White:

Pineapples are pseudomorphs. For years mineralogists thought the opal had supplanted a cluster of glauberite. Now some researchers believe the original crystals were ikaite, which were replaced by calcite, which was finally replaced by opal.
