Thank you very much Juan. The Sapo elbaite is one of my favorites. Now I need a Jonas Mine rubellite to keep it company. Actually there were several nice ones at the last Tucson Show. I just didn't think mortgaging the house was a good idea. Ha ha.

For sure :-))) but be patient and sure in the future you will get a good specimen from Jonas Mine to be married with tour Elbaite from The Sapo mine ;-)

Superb specimens Michael, and extremely well photographed. I have a thing about pegmatite minerals and you capture them really well ! Methinks I'll have to get a proper camera..

Thank you Mike. You would think photographing a stationary object would be pretty easy, but that's not necessarily the case. It took me quite a while to develop a technique that gives acceptable results. And then there are some specimens that just defy being photographed.
By the way, I have been enjoying the zeolite photos in your thread - they are quite good. The Isle of Skye looks like a terrific place to enjoy a day of field collecting. I'm quite impressed with your finds.

Thus far, the Brazilian minerals I have chosen to post have all been from the state of Minas Gerais. While this state is probably the most well known for producing the greatest variety of minerals, a few other states in Brazil have produced nice specimens as well. The next few posts will show some specimens from Paraiba, Espirito Santo, Rio Grande do Sul, and Bahia states.

Today's post will be the last with specimens from Brazil. Each of today's pieces originated in Brazil's southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul. This state lies just north of the border with Uruguay, and hosts important deposits of agates. Emigrants from Idar-Oberstein discovered the deposits in 1827, and by 1834 agates were being shipped to the the lapidaries in Idar-Oberstein. Brazilian agates have very even layers which makes them prized for engraving and carvings.
In addition to agates, Rio Grande do Sul is famous for producing thousands of pounds of amethyst from a huge basalt flow centered around the small town of Ametista do Sul. Anyone who has attended a major mineral show is certainly familiar with the large amethyst "cathedrals" and had to wonder about the difficulties of shipping these all over the world.

With today's post, I'll continue to show specimens from South America, moving from Brazil on the east coast to Peru on the west coast. Peru was home to some of the oldest cultures in the world, so it is no surprise that it has a long history of mining. The first documented records of mining in Peru date to the Incan culture, but there were certainly simple attempts at mining by pre-Incan peoples. Metal artifacts of gold, silver, and copper, and pottery decorated with pigments made from hematite date to 2000-1100 BC.
Modern mining is one of Peru's leading industries and metal exports of gold, silver, zinc, and lead are a major contributor to the country's economy. Peru's mines have produced countless numbers of beautiful specimens for mineral collectors and museums worldwide.
