Thanks Vic. It has been many years ago, but I grew up in the Bay State, and as a young collector, went on field trips all over MA, VT, NH, ME, CT, and NY. As a result, I have been following your collection thread with great interest. I'm sure quite a few of the localities where we collected are probably closed now.

As a young mineral collector, my approach to collecting was not very focused. The first "group" of minerals that I remember taking an interest in was zeolites. Although there were several trap rock quarries within a one hour drive of where we lived, they were closed to collecting. However, if you walked along the railroad tracks and searched through the ballast, you could usually find a few decent datolite, calcite, and prehnite specimens. This was my first introduction to the zeolite group and its common associates.
All of this was before U.S. collectors were exposed to the overwhelming variety and abundance of Indian zeolites. My first introduction to zeolites from India was at a small mineral show, and I remember thinking that the variety and crystallization were fantastic. I came home with a nice peach-colored stilbite from Jalgaon and an okenite from Mumbai. The vast amount of this specimen material available during the past 25 years has made it easy to become jaded. However, nearly 35 years later, I have to admit that I am still fascinated by zeolites from the Deccan basalts. So, in the next few posts I have decided to show some of the Deccan zeolites in my collection.

Thank you Roger. According to Rock Currier, these are sometimes found free in crevices between breccia blocks. I had only seen a few photos of these on Mindat. In any case I was happy to have found this one at Tucson.

Thanks Roger. So many of the zeolites are white or colorless, it's nice when there are inclusions that impart a little color.

Hello Michael,
As ever, perfect.
I forgot morphological distinctions (on termination) that allow differentiation of natrolite, mesolite and scolecite.
Thank you for sharing.

Hi Roger,
I am not aware of any absolute way to visually distinguish between natrolite, mesolite, and scolecite. Generally speaking, mesolite forms the thinnest crystals, natrolite somewhat larger, and scolecite forms more robust crystals, but this isn't a reliable identifying characteristic. Of course natrolite and mesolite are orthorhombic, while scolecite is monoclinic. The problem is, twinning makes scolecite appear to be orthorhombic. To my knowledge, the terminations of all three minerals are typically low angle pyramids. If anyone knows a reliable way to tell these apart visually, feel free to chime in.

Thank you Bob and Roger. Yes, the specimens rest on a a piece of glass and the backgrounds, consisting of various colored mat boards, are placed at a 45 degree angle below the glass. A single light illuminates the background and creates the gradient effect, I use 3 lights above to illuminate the specimen, and often a reflector or two to highlight crystal faces, etc. I use halogen lights with the camera white balance set to the color temperature of the bulbs. It's not a real complex setup but yields adequate results for my needs.
