Ahhh, now I see the light ! Thanks for explaining that Don. The paper between the light and the subject technique sounds neat, I'll have to give that a go.

Sincerely yours,

Mike,

One explanation that might explain why the first picture of the floating kunzite specimen is so red is that the paper filters out the shorter end of the spectrum so only the light with wavelengths toward the longer end (red) get through and thus making the specimen look more red than the true color. That was not my intention. I was trying to highlight the termination.

Don

Don,

Your kunzite specimen from Pech is really nice. I like the texture revealed in the second photo 1-IMG_1672.JPG which I assume is the bottom of the piece. You have really captured the growth features/etching nicely. I have to compliment you on your photos; they have improved a lot since your first posts.

Lastly, the ametrine slab is very interesting, and I also like the realgar from Quiruvilca.

Michael,

Image 1663 is the top and image 1672 is the bottom. You are correct.

Thank you for your reply Don. I wonder if the 'filtered quartz and reveal' bulb is an arc-light type bulb with quartz glass which would allow UV light to illuminate the subject, thus producing the strong pink colour of the kunzite in image 1663. Could it then be fluorescence causing the colour change?

Best regards, Mike

Dear Mike,

What I used was a quartz halogen lamp that has a clear plate over the bulb (factory installed) and a Reveal GE (TM) bulb which has a "full spectrum" although I don't know the exact wavelength of the light emitted. I used a sheet of white copy paper between the light(s) and the specimen and that seemed to bring out the surface details which were washed out without the paper. I also used that technique in the last Russian Fluorite specimen that I posted a while back on FMF. I hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Don

Mike,

The clear plate is under the bulb, id est between the bulb and the subject. Probably put there to prevent anyone from touching the bulb.

Don

Wendwilsonite is a very rare calcium, magnesium, cobalt arsenate that is typically pink, red or magenta. It was named in 1987 in honor of Dr. Wendell E. Wilson (1946-), mineralogist, founder, editor and publisher of the Mineralogical Record.
