Hi Am. To me these Vesuvianite specimens are of the most beautiful of all species. Congratulations and thanks for showing.

PostPosted: Feb 15, 2015 20:27    Post subject: The Mizunaka Collection - tourmaline with history

Thanks Joan.

At the turn of the century China’s Empress Dowager, Cixi had a passion for pink tourmaline from San Diego County. From about 1902 to 1910 approximately 120 tons of gem grade rough was exported to China. The rough was made into carvings and other accessories.

This carving and rough is from that time period. It was originally in the Loren Merrill collection.

Mike,

Really neat pieces. Congrats!

It looks like the carving is of a European subject. Do you think it was made here for export to China, or made in China for export to Europe, where Chinese objects were popular.

As for the "rough", it looks pretty nice and a few steps above cutting rough.

BTW, is Loren Merrill the Mt. Mica guy from the pre-1930s?

Bob,

The origin of the carving is uncertain. It may have been carved here for export to China and never made it there, or it was carved in China and somehow made it's way back to the US. Loren Merrill is the miner/collector from Mt Mica.

What a great Stewart Mine elbaite! Well, the raw specimen, not the carving. In my humble opinion, nothing's more beautiful than the awesome crystals nature makes, it grieves me to see such wonderful things broken and carved :-(

I hope no one feels offended by this, but am I the only collector who doesn't like carved minerals? Especially not, when such a wonderful treasure like an elbaite from Stewart Mine has been destroyed :-(

Tobi
