This is an article that was requested by the publishers of the Russian journal Mineralogical Almanac, Ludmila Cheshko and Michael Leybov, after John gave a talk on this subject in Tucson 2015 that they attended. It is, of course, a greatly abbreviated version of the talk which included far more photographs and interesting anecdotes, so if you want to hear the talk in full you can go to the Mineral Lectures Series

Mineralogical Almanac kindly allowed us to publish this here as a scoop, you can find the printed version together with many more great articles in the new issue of the Mineralogical Almanac that will be available in Tucson 2016
