Thanks Carles, already found that yesterday on the web, but is this also the locality with the quartz/schorl specimens??? The label of my specimens says LE Pinto, not ZE Pinto ...

Aesthetic specimen. Nice color contrast. I guess it's better in person and am sure you might improve that photo (with a bit of patience, of course). I know how difficult is sometimes to shoot these transparent colorless quartz crystals.

Have you tried a darker background for your beautiful Dalnegorsk calcite?
Your're both right: The quartz/schorl specimen deserves a better photo, but as Carles said it is really difficult, but I'll try again, no guarantee that it works :(

And concerning the Russian calcite, I tried with dark background:

Probably. There is some language overlapping, as in Pakistan and many other places. So different spellings can be expected. Just compare with Mumbai/Bombay, Kolkata/Calcuta, Marselha/Marseille and so on.

And not forgetting the inaccuracy of many people when it comes to writing labels :-(

However, if anyone here has ever heard of a Le Pinto Mine or Mina Le Pinto in Minas Gerais where quartzes with schorl are found, please contact me ;-)

Tobi

P.S. Here's another photo of the specimen. Still far away from a good photo but slightly better than the first one and from a better angle:

There may be other factors at work.

One is that the Brazilian localities are in Portuguese, and it is not uncommon to see labels "corrected" to display the name as Spanish, because the original name didn't look right. For example, the Vista do Rio Mine is sometime seen as Vista de Rio Mine, which also means "view of the river" in Spanish, but the "do" is the correct form in Portuguese.

Secondly, and maybe more importantly, Brazil (just like China) had / has lots of small prospects - basically a small hole in a vein exploited by an individual. Many are give fancy names, but produced few specimens. Others may have been attributed to existing mines, but poorly spelled by the less educated miner, or to intentionally protect the locality.

Last, Mindat is far from complete in its localities. For example, years ago, I bought about 100 specimens from Brazil from Ed Swoboda, who was involved in mining most of them. Over half of the localities did not appear in Mindat. I took them to Luiz Menezes (God rest his soul), who was an expert on localities, and he immediately recognized many pieces as Swoboda localities, and confirmed the localities. But none was in Mindat. He also had to correct a few minor misspellings on Ed's labels.

The short reply is: maybe it is misspelled, maybe it is attributed wrong, maybe it is a small locality, or maybe it just does appear in the literature (or Mindat).

I'll take a photo with me to Tucson and ask Erwin or one of the other Brazil dealers to see if I can help you track it down.

For those of you who like my collection but don't want to browse 35 pages of this gallery (with many boring specimens and many poor photos among the good ones ...):

I'm about to put my favourite specimens together in classy mineral charts to present the best minerals from my collection in an appropriate way, here's the forum link to this new section in the "art museum" of FMF: https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?t=4627

Thanks Bob, but when I browse the first pages of this thread (the first pages are nearly 7 years old), I can't find many specimens that are still in my display collection, many of them have been discarded, sold or traded during the last years. And the photos were often really poor at the beginning, I improved both my camera and my technique during the years ... however, the new thread https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?t=4627 only includes the best specimens with their best photos, so the new mineral charts show the essence of my collection :)

Tobi, this morning I am browsing your collection while listening to my favorite Golden Oldies in Youtube.
I thank God for creating such beautiful mineral specimens while I do it.

Thank you, Tom ... but as an atheist I don't think that "God" created them. The most "gods" I've heard of while studying history rather created war, hatred and violence ... but that's not the wrong place for this, so sorry for the digression.

I'm glad that you like browsing my gallery. And combining the joy of minerals with the joy of music sounds like a pleasant way to relax :)

And finally a minor sulfide specimen, a galena from Poland. The friend and collector that sold me the two wonderful sphalerites above gave me this small galena specimen as a gift because he knows how much I love PbS. Not a giant eye catcher, but a really nice miniature for a gift :-)

Another minor but nice specimen that I became as a gift together with the two sphalerites above (well, THEY were not a gift, only the galena from Poland above ;-))
