It's just some days ago that I discovered and watched them on Federico's channel, those provide a fantastic insight into this world-class museum!

It's probably a matter of perspective - you're in more danger crossing the road etc. Sure the occasional bad thing happens in Beirut but I would think that 99% of the time (in recent years) it's fine, but the good times don't get the sensationalist reporting that bad times do.

Judging by the outstanding quality and size of the mineral specimens in the MIM Museum that have been posted here, I reckon the greatest danger would be from fainting and hitting your head on the floor!
A chance I will have to take myself, one day, hopefully soon...

Pierre, I agree - that Grossular specimen 1171jpg is incredibly beautiful.

I can only second what Mike said.
There are many superb photos and excellent videos taken by professionals but frankly they don't do any justice to the quality of that collection.
And if you do recover from fainting and hitting your head on the floor, danger #2 is the addictive Lebanese food which is quite different from the exported version that you might have already experienced around the world.
All what you need is a reliable car and driver to get around which is something that can be easily arranged by your hotel.
Gérard
PS: Because you will faint so many times on your first visit, make sure you stay long enough for a second one.

PostPosted: Mar 21, 2016 14:39    Post subject: Re: The MIM Museum in Beirut, Lebanon

That aquamarine from Mt. Xuebaoding with its 13 cm (!!!) main crystal (1188.jpg) is the best beryl specimen I've ever seen from that locality. That captivating, well balanced mix of lustrous black cassiterite, blue beryl and pale muscovite is so great; and that size makes it even greater! All of the specimens here in this thread are world-class, and though it is really hard to pick some favourites, this awesome rock would be one of them!

Wow, simply wow ...

 Description:
Main crystal size: 9,5 cm
Bouquet of quartz scepters, the upper part of which is transparent, colorless and brilliant and the lower part very fine and whitish. When they were harvested, these samples consisted of dolomite plates from whence protruded quartz points measuring 3 to 5 cm. It was only by accident during cleaning in concentrated hydrochloric acid that these structures in scepters appeared after dissolution of the dolomite. The reason for their formation is that the quartz's initial growth was inhibited by the solution of calcium and magnesium still very enriched in CO2, whereas once the quartz crystals had grown past the solution, they could develop normally with larger sections.

 Description:
Main crystal size: 5,7 cm
Basalt plate covered on one face with 16 rather transparent, pale yellow powellite crystals having developed on apophyllite in quadratic blocks of a pale beige color, with some pale yellowy-orange stilbites and white scolecite balls. The ensemble is relatively intact considering its dimensions.

 Mineral: Vesuvianite
 Locality:
Jeffrey Mine, level 2440, Asbestos, Les Sources RCM, Estrie, Québec, Canada
 Dimensions: 7,0 x 6,0 x 6,0 cm
 Description:
Main crystal size: 2,5 cm
Group of green translucent crystals with crimson terminations. The crystals are very brilliant and consist of a variety of vesuvianite rich in boron and colored crimson by manganese. The color transition from the saturated crimson of the terminations to the light green of the prisms' body is striking. A lot of old recrystallized breakage here and there, as is often the case in this mine.

 Mineral: Vesuvianite
 Locality:
Jeffrey Mine, level 2440, Asbestos, Les Sources RCM, Estrie, Québec, Canada
 Dimensions: 7,0 x 7,0 x 14,0 cm
 Description:
Main crystal size: 13,4 cm
Large green crystal with a square section and pointed termination developed on a micro-crystallized mass of vesuvianite. The crystal has been neatly glued back in 2 places. All the samples of this discovery have been more or less repaired, because their crystals were fractured by tectonic movements due to the narrowness of the pocket in which they formed. In addition, most of the broken surfaces show signs of later recrystallization, growth or dissolution. This is why most of the broken sections do not fit together well and require added resin, which does not seem to be the case for this specimen.

As usual, world-class specimens. The last three (Panasqueira apatite, Frizington Baryte, XXL magnetite from Huanggang) are my favourites from that post!

My life is complete. The Powellite is one of the finest specimens I have ever seen of any mineral anywhere. That includes the Bisbee spangolite!!

 Dimensions: 2,5 x 1,9 x 1,9 cm
 Description:
Main crystal size: 2,5 cm
Transparent almost perfect 53.05 carat octahedron with smooth and flat faces, with some slightly modified terminations and inclusions (of flattened sulfide crystals, probably pyrrhotite + pentlandite) in its center. The latter are reflected 4 times thanks to a kaleidoscope effect on the faces. Unlike most diamonds, this one has almost not been dissolved by the kimberlite which must have risen very fast to the surface of the Earth, hence the flat and smooth faces, as well as the straight edges. Such crystals are known in the trade as "Glassies"

Outstanding quality and size (for a single crystal) on that gemmy proustite from Dolores Tercera Mine (1620.jpg). Actually not a mineral that I like, but that one is awesome, the photo too!

 Mineral: Gypsum
 Locality:
Ar Ruwais (Ar-Ruwais), Al Mintaqa (Al-Mintaqa), Al Gharbia (Al-Gharbyya), United Arab Emirates
 Dimensions: 7,5 x 6,0 x 17,0 cm
 Description:
Main crystal size : 18,0cm
Transparent, colorless and intact single crystal showing the unusual shape for this species of a hexagonal prism, with remains of clay at the base. Inside the crystal are small bubbles creating the outline of a separate crystal structure. There is also one small water bubble near the base of the crystal. This crystal was found in 1999-2000 during the construction of a quay for ships on the shores of the Persian Gulf Sea at the Ruwais Petrochemical Complex. This entailed the excavation of the shore to a depth of 12 m below sea level. The mass excavation of the area (about 6.000 m²) was carried out by a bulldozer with ripper. At a depth of -8 a layer of green hardened clay was met hosting rare cavities (with the largest measuring 30 x 60 cm) which, when opened, were full of milky and salty water. The greatest majority of these geodes were destroyed during the works: the surviving ones were only those on the vertical walls of the excavation. Typically, the geodes were half full of gray-brown clay, and the gypsum crystals, when present, were stuck in the clay and could be easily extracted by hand. All crystals were matrixless. The crystals size was, on average, of 8-10 cm, but in very few instances samples up to 25 cm were recovered. They were remarkable by their transparency, luster and crystal habit. These crystals were never washed and should still retain some salt on their surfaces.
